A strange crankcase can you help
Posted by: Tony Betts - 15-01-2019, 02:29 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (11)

I've been sorting through my pile of crankcasses that has gotten to large. To sort there condition. And try and sell some.

We're I came across this.
[attachment=5081]

Nothing strange about that you may think, it's the crankcase they made as a two bearing in the three bearing castings.
These castings were usually fitted to cars around 1936 just before the full three bearing engine was fitted. So a mid Ruby car.

Please look at the pictures closely.

Picture two, shows the crankcase is on the same hight as a box saloon? Not the hight of a Ruby it would be expected to be?

The engine number has never been stamped were it should be? But there does look to be an engine number under the nosecone.

Also check the Birmal, and the part number?

The Birmal, it has an A in front of it?

And the part number, 1A is cast in. And the three numbers are stamped?

So they decided it's part number after manufacture?

Is this a prototype?

Any help or input welcomed.

Tony.

Does anyone know the modern equivalent colour for the "Blue fine lines" used on cars from 1928ish onwards. Also described as "Sky blue" and "Nile blue" sometimes. Suggestions welcome!

Anyone recommend a decent meter? Would a second hand Avo be worth the money?

  Smiths Speedo types
Posted by: Mark McKibbin - 15-01-2019, 12:13 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Does anyone have a listing of Smiths Speedo Types showing the Turns per Mile as there are plenty for sale but I do not know what for instance a TN is.  A list would make it easier.

I know the 3 speed boxes needed 2240 TPM and the 4 Speeds needed a 1020 TPM Speedo and as I have a 4 speed I'm hoping to find the older style speedo but with about 1000 TPM to match.

  Timing gear sizes

I have been working on my chummy engine rebuild today and am fascinated with how Austins managed to match up the gear sets.
My engine has never been stripped before and the gear sizes are as follows :-
Camshaft +7
Crankshaft +2
Intermediate -4
Mag drive +3

 I find that amazing.
Does anyone know how they did it ?

  Zenith Carburation Service Tin
Posted by: Mike Costigan - 13-01-2019, 01:37 PM - Forum: Sales - Replies (3)

I'm having a bit of a clear-out, and have decided I have no further use for this:

The tin is approx 9" square and probably dates from the 1940s or 1950s; contents include a selection of choke tubes, main and compensation jets and various other bits suitable for Zenith carbs from 1930s onwards. A nice item if you collect garage memorabilia or useful if you are working on these carbs.

I have no idea how to price it so am planning to put it on eBay to see what it fetches, but if anyone here wants to make me an offer beforehand ...

  Chassis dating mystery
Posted by: agmatthews - 13-01-2019, 09:32 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (23)

Hi,
I have an Austin 7 with no obvious chassis numbers that I'd like some help to date.

This is an Australian car, so Austin made chassis and Australian made body

Chassis:
Short wheel base - 6'3"
No longitudinal chassis brace
Two bearing brake cross shaft
Z profile riveted chassis rear extensions
Rear diff dated July 1931
(as this does not match the rest of the chassis I'm guessing it's a later replacement)
Chassis rail appears a millimetre or two deeper than the other chassis I have

Body:
Steel 'chummy' body
No body-line mouldings as you see on Holden bodies.
Hole for battery under passenger seat
Running boards Type B (possibly Type C but bolt holes run along parallel with the edge of the board)
Front guards / wings Type D ( these are new - reproduction)
Rear guards / wings Type C (possibly Type D but they match the dimensions for the Type C)
Steering wheel - no splines

Engine:
The engine I have with this chassis is numbered M24012
(appears to be a September 1926 engine - but no guarantees it is originally from this chassis)

Photos below
(the sanding on the chassis to look for the chassis number was a light flap wheel sand just to remove the paint)

My best guess, using Woodrow, Purves, and Google as a guide, is that this is a chassis from somewhere between August 1926 and July 1928

So my questions are:
How do I confirm if this is the "deeper chassis side frame" from August 1926 onward?
What do I measure to determine this?

Are these the rear chassis extensions and damper brackets from August 1926 onwards or the "improved type" from December 1927 onwards
How do I tell?

Is it fair to say that the rear axle is not originally from this chassis - based on it's date?

Does anyone know what the story is with a number of Australian chassis with no obvious numbers stamped on them?
