  Storing engines
Posted by: Mick Hanna - 05-06-2018, 04:19 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

I have a spare engine that I've repaired and refurbished that will be stowed beneath the bench to keep it out of the way. It's unlikely to be used for a while (fingers crossed) and I am wondering if it should be filled with oil before it is hidden from sight. I intend turning it over by hand every now and then. Any advice?

  Choice of Rear Axle
Posted by: Jamie - 05-06-2018, 03:38 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Good afternoon.

I have recently purchased a Ruby chassis, running gear and matching V5. From memory, it is late model, a 1935 version, I think. As it has no body or engine, I plan to build a new shell to and find a suitable engine. I intend to keep the machine to use, not to sell on again, so wish to make it to my tastes. Although I could source and rebuild another A7 engine, I understand that with some minor modification, a Reliant engine can be fitted which I believe could prove cheaper than a decent rebuilt A7 engine.

Does this necessitate a change of the rear axle or does the gearing on Ruby axle suit it the Reliant engine?

Thank you.

Jamie.

  R47 rim fixings
Posted by: JonE - 05-06-2018, 12:50 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

I think I have R47s on the 1929. They have been messed around inside a little, but the removal of the rim involves a sideways movement to disengage the 3 points and thus the front, from the bowl.

This feels much less secure than later lights which have a screw attachment for retaining the rim on the lower part of the bowl.

I intend to put some of the A7W reflectors in which would ideally be silicone sealed to the glass (as the bulb access points are rearwards).

This will make the rim elements heavier, and I'm wondering if this is a good idea with the securing mechanism that seems like it could be disengaged with a long, rough road, for instance!

what have others done with adding the A7W reflector units?

thanks

  Ultrasonc cleaning
Posted by: Spex - 04-06-2018, 10:35 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Good Morning/Evening.
Someone on the old forum was going to purchase an ultrasonic cleaner. I cannot remember whom.
I am looking for one large enough to clean A7 crankcases and the like.
Was the purchase successful and the results worth it?

Brooklands Double 12 Motorsport Festival, Surrey 16-06-2018 17-06-2018

Starts: 16-06-2018
Ends: 17-06-2018

Brooklands Double 12 Motorsport Festival, Surrey

Brooklands Road, Weybridge, Surrey, KT13 0QN

10AM-5PM Each Day

Normal admission charges apply

Website: https://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/whats-o...t-festival

Quote:Organised in association with the Vintage Sports-Car Club, the event celebrates Brooklands’ rich motoring history, and is always held on the weekend closest to the Anniversary of the original opening of the Brooklands race track in 1907.
The two-day extravaganza features Speed Trials, Driving Tests, the prestigious Double Twelve Concours and Test Hill ascents, alongside family-friendly entertainment and activities.
The structure of the competitions allows entrants to enjoy a full weekend of motoring competition and the flexibility to choose from the three stand-alone competitions:
  • The Double Twelve Speed Trials on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit (Sat 16 June)
  • The Double Twelve Concours (16 and 17 June)
  • The Double Twelve Driving Tests (Sun 17 June)
Each event will have its own class and overall winners but, to achieve a Brooklands Double Twelve award, an entrant must compete in any two of the three events with the combined scores of these two deciding their Double Twelve placing.
As well as the main competitions, the Test Hill Challenge will also take place. This will involve everything from motorcycles to giant pre-war racing cars tackling the punishing 352ft (107m) slope, with running races for energetic children.
With family entertainment once again planned throughout the site and lots more attractions to be announced, this is a weekend for everyone!

Parking for pre-war vehicles, pre-booked car clubs and competitors on site only, entry is via the Campbell Gate off Brooklands Road.

Parking for visitors arriving in non-vintage vehicles will be in The Heights off Wellington Way with overflow parking in the Community Park if required with park and ride buses. Please follow event signage on the day.

  Scuttle (D Shape) Fuel Tank
Posted by: Timothy P - 04-06-2018, 01:14 PM - Forum: Wants - Replies (6)

Long shot I know, but does anyone have a D Shape 'Chummy' Type scuttle fuel tank that they no longer need?
Mine has a very slow weep which keeps returning and some ugly 'Repairs' I'd like to sort, but would like to continue using the car while I effect the proper repairs (either to mine or one I source).
I'm not too worried about condition. Though a nice ready to fit example would be great, an example needing repairs would be better than nothing.
As the email function is not working my email is tepayne@hotmail.co.uk or just reply to this thread

Adapting a rear axle for Girling brakes
Posted by: Charles P - 03-06-2018, 01:22 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (21)

To fit Girling type rear brakes to an earlier car I'm told that you need to machine down the backplates.
Having done this I've discovered an oddity and I'm after advice.
I turned down the brake backplate mount so that it just cleaned up the boss for the spring mounting pin. This gives an OD of 4.25 whereas a Girling backplate needs 4.00. See the picture. I wouldn't want less metal around the pin.
Did Austin alter the spring or pin position for Girling brakes or am I unlucky in trying to adapt the "oval backplate" 1935-ish brakes? Or perhaps this is normal and I'm worrying unnecessarily!

Thanks

Charles
