Continuing the holiday theme, here's a late 1929 B-Type Coupe; presumably the caravan was a resident on the site because the number plate does not match that of the Coupe (and, indeed, doesn't appear to be a British number, although the location looks to be in the UK).

  Screen identification
Posted by: Peter Naulls - 31-05-2018, 12:14 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

Someone gave me this rather elegant screen thinking it was for a Ruby - which it's clearly not. I'm getting tired of moving it around the workshop and would like to pass it to someone who can use it - but without knowing what it belongs to that's difficult. Measurements are 43.5 " x 14" high at its narrowest.

Any ideas? Austin 18 maybe? Anyone interested?

Peter.

  Fitting new shells
Posted by: Charles Levien - 31-05-2018, 09:31 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (14)

I recently had my engine out (1937 three bearing) fit a new rear main oil seal, clutch linings and recut valve seats etc — I didn’t look at the bottom end. Having got the engine back in it became apparent that one or two big ends were, shall we say, drawing attention to themselves. I couldn’t face taking the engine out again so ( with apologies to our Welsh/Yorkshire friends) resolved to become an oily coal miner and see if I could fit new shells from underneath. A couple of new ramps at half price from Halfords helped and after an hours work the sump and gauze were off. Removal of the end caps revealed a good deal of wear and cavitation in the shells so a day later I was back with a set of new shells, big end bolts and lock nuts. Then the fun started — I don’t think I’ve ever had such a fiddly job to do in my life as trying to get those new bolts into place from underneath, not helped by them being a tight fit. In the end I used the old bolts with new nuts, torqued up to 18lbs which I reckon is tight enough.
Would I do this again? I guess I would but fitting new bolts is really a job to be done from the top before fitting the block back. Level of happiness having got job finished — massive!

Charles

  Bore honing
Posted by: Andy Bennett - 30-05-2018, 08:54 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

Back to basics
I would asppreciate some advice regarding honing a freshly machined bore.
I have access to a Flex hone of the right diameter to just squeeze in (the type that looks like a loo brush with carbon balls on the ends).
A look at YouTube seems to suggest 5 or 6 quick passes through the bore with a WD40 type lubricant.

Before I do anything irreversible I would appreciate some thoughts and opinions from the learned, in that:

5 or 6 swift passes on a medium electric screwdriver speed of a second or 2 per pass, or more?
should I reverse the 5-6 passes to create a diamond scoring?

Assume I am just looking for a result of light just visible scratches to hold a little oil rather than scoring of the bore.

thanks
Andy
