  Platts parts catalogue

is it still available as a new reprint?

I think the Cornwall site mentions John Barker, but I seem to remember seeing it on one of the clubs booklists.

  Boiling Petrol?
Posted by: Dave Wortley - 20-05-2018, 07:53 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (20)

Yesterday I did a 75 mile run in the chummy. It was a hot day.All was well for the first 30 miles but then the engine started running very lumpily and would not exceed 25mph in 2nd gear for a further 20 miles. On climbing out of lower ground onto the moors above Sheffield everything returned to normal. The same thing happened two years ago on the same run so I fitted a heat shield on the exhaust manifold and on the downpipe but these mods haven't done the trick. I checked and cleaned the distributor points,ap and all HT lead connections but all appear sound anyway. Any ideas re preventing this please? The chummy has a 4 blade fan and small SU carb and electric pump. Looked on the old forum but can't find anything.
Thanks,
Dave.

  oiled spark plug
Posted by: john deacon - 19-05-2018, 12:19 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

Any suggestions, my 1936 special keeps oiling up No.3 plug, this is now so bad it is covered in just a couple of miles.
The engine was rebuilt no more than 1000 miles ago, rebored +20, new pistons, rings etc. Have checked compression and all four are between 7.0 and7.6 bar. No oil baffles are fitted.
I have pulled the offending piston suspecting broken rings but they are fine. I have checked ring gaps which were set at 0.006 to 0.008 when installed, and find the oil rings are now 0.010 and 0.015 which seems a bit odd.
If this was OHC I might suspect valve guides but vintage car friends (non A7) suggest with side valve oil through the guides is unlikely.
       Any suggestions?

  Gudgeons

With the wonderful assistance of Chris Garner, the engine is out of my Ulster Rep. We found that the gearbox does not have a blind spline(a good thing) and that there are double valve springs(also good). Unfortunately, in addition to the buggered crank case, number four has some very deep grooves. I am guessing that it is the little end gudgeon keepers(if there are these). How is the little end gudgeon fitted? Is it a press fit, or are there keepers? Austin pistons and Austin rods.

  3 speed ratios
Posted by: JonE - 18-05-2018, 06:52 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

I've now got a spare standard gearbox to learn to overhaul, and thought it might be good to create a different gear set.

Who are the suppliers of the gear pairs to enable something like an Ulster ratio, and is there anything else (other than simple part replacement through wear) that needs consideration?

thanks

Car will only run on easy start... help please

Help...

I got the engine back together and it happily starts using “start ya bastard”. (Easy start) within a couple of seconds of starter motor.

I have taken the fuel bowl off and checked all jets are clear.

The manual pump lever sends fuel through the float valve. If the manual pump works I assume that the pump is working off the Cam as well. Any ideas welcome.

Does anybody have a spare or can anyone make one for me please? Fed up with wobbly winscreen as the bolt on the other side is never tight.

The best I could find was this from 2001:

Is there a video or a "photo story" anywhere?

  FX 1491
Posted by: Mixer - 18-05-2018, 07:50 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Hi All,
Having purchased a 38 Ruby FX1491 I am looking for any history of the car.I have limited MOT's going back 5 years
but am wishing to find out the usual stuff like what year was it restored or how many times was it restored. It has a Belfast reg number and I have a photo in a classic car magazine of it being in a rally in 1993.The car is in excellent order all round and the paintwork is as good as I've ever seen,I just have small issues such as the sliding roof don't slide, all the internal rails and catches are intact but it has been fixed shut,so I would maybe like to get it working again.Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Confused
