Question What's My Car Number?
Posted by: Matt_Harnden - 09-06-2018, 09:26 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (4)

Hi All,

Following another great meeting at Wollaton last weekend, I have set myself a mission to find my car number or to at least know what would have been stamped on the little ID plate that is on the nearside of the battery/toolbox.

Under the bonnet of most of the Ruby's on show, the plate was clearly visible and stamped accordingly.

As I have a late Opal (1937), I have always thought that the 'Car Number' was not available as this ceased to be used after a certain point. Can anyone confirm this? It's a bit odd as the two holes that are used to mount the plate are there on my 7.

I assume that the plate should say 'Car No.' followed by 'APE' and a set of 5-6 numbers? Where can I find out?  Huh

Thanks for any advice.

Matt

  Naming cars -poll

It might be my grumpy side but I seem to be noticing more people using pet names, frequently female, for their cars. This is something's that I'd never do but am I in the minority?
So I'm attempting to use the "Polling" function.
The question is
Do you give your car(s) "Pet" names?

  Flickering oil pressure gauge
Posted by: Nick Lettington - 08-06-2018, 04:28 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Can anyone tell me why my '35 ORT oil guage gets a fit of the shivers from time to time? At first I thought it might be oil level (though it was still at half mast)... then that it might be running hot... it doesn't happen all the time which is more confusing... Is it normal or should I be expecting a bit of work on my engine soon...

Slightly worried of Colchester.

  Panel thickness of original Ulsters
Posted by: Erich - 08-06-2018, 03:16 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi All,

This is more of an academic question to enrich my knowledge, rather than something that I can change on a car. In working on my CC Ulster body, with some welding that a friend is doing, the body is made from 40 thou, what I would guess is 1100. Pretty soft and basically pure aluminum, rather than a harder alloy. Were the original cars the same or similar? I would guess, pure aluminum, but would the thickness have been the same rather than perhaps 50 thou which is a bit more robust?

  Vacuum Wiper Arm
Posted by: Douglas Alderson - 07-06-2018, 07:58 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (4)

I have a lucas vacuum wiper and purchased an arm from one of the A7 suppliers but I can not get it tight on the spindle, possibly a worn spindle or lose fitting arm but both look ok.  Does any one have a fix to get it tight on the spindle?

Also the suppliers only stock one type of arm were they all the same for the all A7 cars over the ages or is the one curently stocked the only one Austin used?

I do have a couple of the vacuum wipers with differnt spindles,

One with a small hole in the spindle which the arm hooks into and uses a spring to retain the arm, but the arm I have is worn out.
One with two notches in the spindle, not sure how that one worked.
One with a half round notch which takes a screw fixing but the arm with the fixing won't fit the car as it makes the spindle to short.

Any thoughts are these wipers of other random non A7 cars?

Hi does anyone have any knowledge of the history of “Emily” 1936 Ruby EPG 614. I have viewed her as she is for sale, but I am a newbie to the Seven world. I know that she has been refurbished and does not bear her original engine number. I understand that she was owned by a Seaford gentleman until December 2017, but would be interested to know of the condition she was in before sale. Further, I intend to visit the Senlac club this month and join up, but is there anyone that could help me with decision making? Maybe even visit the car with me near Lewes, lunch included of course? Hope I am not asking too much.

  RH Specialist Car Insurance
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 07-06-2018, 09:43 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (11)

Recently I returned from touring in France, Belgium, and Holland in the MGA. On arrival back at Dover on the ferry, the battery was dead - not clever when you are right at the head of the two queues of vehicles! When finally I got a jump start the engine was running like a pig and eventually the car expired on the bridge out of the port, going up to the A2. I couldn't get going and with darkness falling, cold wind blowing, and rain coming down, I chickened out and called RH for recovery. Their agent was super-helpful and I was picked up within 45 minutes and transported back to Hertfordshire. I was phoned by an RH agent an hour or so after my intial call to check that I had indeed been picked up OK.

I marvel at the value we get from RH and whilst I know there were some issues for the last Eurotour etc, my latest experience was nothing but positive. Well done RH!

Is anyone using Automatic Transmission fluid in their gearbox, if you are what are your longterm experiences of doing so?
