Returning from a classic car show tonight, I started to move uphill from some traffic lights and there was a terrific bang and then the car would only move very slowly. I suspected a broken half shaft or a prop shaft coupling but managed to get a tow home? I jacked the back axle up and both wheels turn freely but when I turn them the prop shaft doesn't turn also if I turn the front prop shaft behind the gearbox the wheels don't turn. Too lat to carry on tonight but any ideas?

Front brake cable adjustment |

On our '37 Ruby the fork which holds the aluminium brake-cable quadrant is threaded into the pivot pin which retains it. In order to adjust the cable I needed to remove the quadrant and screw in the fork a couple of extra turns - horribly fiddly under the car especially as the split pin was seized in place. Is this a standard arrangement?
My earlier special has a simple wing nut on the back end of the fork for the adjustment. It seems much more satisfactory and I'm wondering why the "improvement" on later cars.

SWB silencer/box length? |

could someone tell me how long a SWB silencer box is please?
I've got what I imagine is a Ruby box - 21.5" long, which will just about fit between the two chassis cross members. But is it better to have it cut down?
I'm running a Ruby manifold, so imagine I'm going to need to bend a Ruby front pipe a bit to get it through rather than under the front crossmember...

Fitting engine & gearbox back into Chummy |

Hi folks
1927 Austin Chummy
Collect the engine after some work done, starter ring, clutch, bearings etc. I did leave the gearbox in situ when taking the engine out but now I find I cannot line it up properly with the gearbox to bolt them together. I have taken the gearbox out so I can match them up on the bench, which I have yet to complete. I am aware that there is a flat on the spline which should match exactly into the receiving hole in the clutch.
My question is can I reinsert the engine and gearbox back into the car as a unit?
Any other information would be helpful.

Hi, has anybody got a remedy for a badly worn torque tube ball and socket other than changing the socket for a better one? Mine still has a lot of play even with the ring nut done up as far as possible. Has anybody tried machining the rear face of the socket to allow the ring nut to go in further?

I am going to look at my first Austin 7 on Sunday. It is a 1936 Mk 1 Ruby. I have been doing my research over the last few months and printed off lots of useful information. The car in question is from a well known Austin 7 dealer that was recommended to me, so the car should be ok.
Is there any tips that you guys could give me for things I should be looking for that I might otherwise miss?
Many Thanks
Wayne

How easy is it to remove these brass guides set in the block?
Any useful tips appreciated.
I’ve had to swap a set of followers from one block( cracked)
To another and 3 won’t fit into the brass guides.
Still investigating.
