Hanging a car from the roof.
Posted by: Hedd Jones - 01-09-2018, 09:51 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (36)

Has anyone hung a car from a chain block?

I need some more room in the shed to carry out the 10year test on my steamer. So plan to gain some room by hanging one of my cars from the roof of the shed on a chain block.

Has anyne done anything similar and can give me some ideas? Where abouts is the centre of gravity do you think?

Current thinking is to make a built up (T section) timber spreader beam (to get straps outboard of the body) with a ring in the centre and a ring on each end. Then have 4 seperate straps. 2 each side from the beam to each wheel (car to be lifted has no wings). Ill use ratchet straps so I can adjust lengths to pick the car up square. It needs to go at least 15 foot in the air.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

For the record I am a structural engineer so I am more than capable of calculating F.O.S for each component of my lifting tackle, I am also more than happy to pick it up on non certified and home made gear.

Girling front brakes / lever angles ??

My ARQ Ruby has at some point in its past been fitted with the later Girling front axle + brakes. just trying to sort out if the front brake lever should be vertical with the road or point forwards ? was told that the brake levers and shoe cams are symmetrical , but according to the parts list they are handed, over to the experts, ps my first posting.  Undecided

  Gearing for EA Sports
Posted by: Jack in the Box - 01-09-2018, 05:02 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (19)

I have just started driving my EA Sports replica after 4 years of building.

I'm only planning to use it on the road i.e. not in competition. The engine has a high comp head, 3 branch exhaust and 1 1/4 SU.

It has a standard, 2 SYN 4 speed box and 4.9 diff. and 19" wheels.

The step between 3rd and 4th gears is really noticeable and spoils the driving experience. I'm thinking that I have several options available to me:

1) Fit a numerically higher diff e.g. 5.25

2) Fit close ratio gears e.g. Super Accessories ratios

3) Do both 1) and 2)

I would welcome any advice please.

Thanks Alan

  Guessing Total Miles
Posted by: Colin Morgan - 01-09-2018, 04:01 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Hi,

How far did Sevens used to go in the old days between rebores, please?

The engine block on my Ruby is likely to be original (Feb '37) from the M number stamped on it.  Given it is currently sleeved and bored to -20 thou, would this suggest that the total mileage the car has travelled is about 5 rebores x 20K = 100K miles, or maybe a bit more?  The speedo currently reads 22K - perhaps this is suggesting that the total is about 120K?  (That is not a lot in 81 years, though.)

Colin

Finally uploading some videos from 2017
Posted by: Duncan Logan - 01-09-2018, 01:01 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Hey all,
I have found my camera after our gathering at Toowoomba Australia in 2017.
I have uploaded a few snippets and will continue to add to the list in the next few days.

Apologies to those that choose to watch as the camera mic was picking up a horrible vibration noise which I can't hear under normal circumstances.

this link is to the first of them.

They are all going to include the word Toowoomba in the title and if I remain consistent they will be in numeric order.

Enjoy.

.jpeg   14_05_11_17_9_07_35.jpeg (Size: 58.8 KB / Downloads: 220)

A delightful picture of a Speedex Special under construction, probably in the late 1950s. Lots of details evocative of the period: the concrete roadway so typical of post-war housing developments, the corrugated iron garage construction, the short-back-and-sides hair style ...
