  £38,000 Chummy
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 03-09-2018, 08:31 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (44)

Could someone please tell me if I have done Rip Van Winkle and been asleep for several decades.

I know it is an early car. I know it is immaculate (even with the chromed brake cable adjusters) - which is lovely if you want a pristine ornament, devoid of any trace of its past owners or history. I know it only take two people to make an auction.

But I am utterly staggered by the £37,950 (inc 15% buyer premium) that the Chummy made at Bonhams sale at Beaulieu over the weekend. Was it an everyday 'value' or was the price simply a product of  two people getting carried away?

  Registration detail

Hello
Some doubt about my Ruby’s number.
Is it possible for a registration number consisting of 3 letters followed by 3 numbers to be the original number of a 1936 car ?

Cloth trim on SWB saloons - plea!
Posted by: JonE - 02-09-2018, 09:40 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

I've altered the title on this as no-one replied. Perhaps I should widen it to ask if anyone HAS original CLOTH trim on their SWB saloon. I'm going to pay a visit to Gaydon and I could cross-reference the ledgers IF your car happens to fit the remaining ledgers and you havent got a heritage certificate already.
thanks in anticipation!

......................

original title was "Margate"...
Other than people I've already been in contact with, have any owners lucky enough to have had Austin ledger information available for their cars had 'Margate' trim listed?

And if so, has anyone got any original remnants surviving?

(Indeed, for that matter, have any others resulted in named trims where remants remain...)

  Holland Birkett Brakes
Posted by: Jamie - 02-09-2018, 08:11 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (11)

The Austin Seven Companion mentions "Holland Birkett brakes", implying that they are some sort of modification to improve the efficiency of the standard brakes. However, it does not seem to give any details of them elsewhere in the book and I can find nothing when searching online.

Can anyone shed any light on what they are or what the modification is?

Thank you.

Jamie.

  fuel tank repair

With slight weeps from the front of my chummy tank, what are the options and the longevity of each option? It feels like the job wants doing only once.
POR15 tank sealant has been mentioned - is that fine with ethanol in others' experience?
Has anyone gone for one of the alloy tanks that were advertised in Association mag a few years back? Or are there other suppliers steel or otherwise?
thanks in anticipation... jon

  Ruby/Pearl rear quarter drop glass
Posted by: Nigel Ricardo - 02-09-2018, 07:36 PM - Forum: Wants - No Replies

Does anyone have a Mk 2 Ruby rear drop glass that I can buy, the condition not important as I need one for my Pearl restoration as a pattern to get new ones cut and don't want to take the ones out of the Ruby.

  Hobson's Perfect window winder
Posted by: Biddlecombe - 02-09-2018, 07:31 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

After fitting my new chrome Hobson's Perfect winder that Stuart brought to the autojumble for me, I now have a matching pair of shiny chrome winders instead of one shiny and one period (alternative to old and used). Therefore I have a working, brown, genuine Hobson's Perfect with bakealite button as in picture if anybody needs one. I would like exactly half of that which I paid for my new one. P.M. if you are interested please. If you think it is not from an Austi, any suggestions welcome.

  Spring packing

I be interested to know what material has been used for front spring packing in the past and what length and thickness to make it. What was originally used in the factory?

  Oxygen Sensors
Posted by: Bob Culver - 02-09-2018, 02:24 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

A few years ago the topic of oxygen sensors arose. Someone was tinkering with and going to report but nothing further. Economy is not really the concern of Seven owners nowadays but observation could be interesting.

I am curious to monitor another car. Is there an inexpensive simple early non heated (single wire) sensor readily available? Can volts easily  be monitored with a digital voltmeter or is interference impossible ? Does a shielded wire suffice to avoid?

Presumably the racer fraternity have extensively explored. Or with Sevens is it impossible to read a meter and stay on the road?
