Max Engine Speed - Standard 38 Ruby
Posted by: fatcatvera - 15-10-2018, 02:09 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

There will obviously be a maximum engine speed limited by valve bounce, but I'm not entirely sure my engine is running correctly at higher engine speed....

In the absence of a rev counter, what should be the maximum achievable road speed in each gear?

Car is standard (as far as I know) 1938 Ruby 3bearing/twin valve spring engine/4 speed 'box.

Thanks

Ray

D Type inner axle felt seal change
Posted by: merlinart - 15-10-2018, 01:38 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (19)

Hello chaps, I need some help please?

Being a newcomer to the Seven...well I've not touched it all for a year now, I 've decided to strip down the Ruby D Type rear axle. The axle is now split and shaft assembly & cwp all removed.

Being a daft old newcomer...how do I remove the spring clip enabling the felt inner seals and bits to come out so that I can replace it all?

I seem to be missing the obvious, but I fully compressed the seal by winding in the adjuster fully, then took the adjuster right out, but there must be a knack to removing the spring clip? Woodrow  shows it all in a diagram but doesn't mention how it is done.

I found a website that mentioned to insert it all by using a length of threaded rod with washers and nuts each end....should I be doing this to remove the lot too, and was this the method back in the day?

I'm sure that it is one of these things that once done is simple to repeat, but currently I'm foxed!

All help will be much appreciated.

regards

Arthur

  Brooklands rev counter drive.
Posted by: Robert Foreman - 14-10-2018, 08:05 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Does anyone have any information on the rev counter drive arrangement on the Brooklands engine.
I know it is a bronze casting fitted to the front timing case of a magneto engine and have seen photos in the past, but unfortunately I can't find them now.
Photographs or drawings of an original would be greatly appreciated.

  phoenix cranks
Posted by: Steve Clare - 14-10-2018, 07:29 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

I am looking for an 1 1/8 phoenix crank for building a spare engine for my 27 chummy.
Although not known for my patience, I will wait in the queue, but if anyone has one they would consider selling, please give me a shout.

Apparently an 1 5/16 will also fit, but I'm guessing that this would involve quite a lot of mods?
I am not going racing- mainly to the off- licence and back.

  What is this Trafficator?
Posted by: Jamie - 14-10-2018, 07:01 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Rummaging through a box of trafficators and trafficator parts, I found this one. I cannot match it to anything on an old Lucas table which I found online.

Can anyone shed any light as to what it might be?

Regards,

Jamie.

  Port polishing
Posted by: Tiger - 14-10-2018, 03:19 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

As some of you will remember my Ruby,s engine was loosely assembled when I acquired her.
The valve timing gears are one tooth out when looking at the dots.
Am I correct re-timing one dot in the middle of the two dots ?

Also any point in polishing the ports while access is easy ?
Regards

It's raining too.

Are there any budding Rivet Detectives out there? See how many non standard items you can spot in this photo (it's my RP but don't worry about upsetting me because I'm not bothered). I can see at least a dozen!

Winner gets a free pass to go out a bit more.

Enjoy!

  Timing gear wear
Posted by: Mark McKibbin - 14-10-2018, 07:50 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

The special is now on the road and the only unknown is the engine, it performs well but it is very noisy and it seems to be coming from the front of the engine and sounds like badly meshing gears.  Here is a video I put on Youtube of me rocking the pulley with the timing gear cover off, there seems to be a lot of play in the crankshaft to cam gear and also cam gear to generator gear.
The link to Youtube is here https://youtu.be/Wnd33CtfXq4
