  Starter Motor Refurb
Posted by: PhilM - 08-12-2018, 02:06 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Although I've now had my 1937 two seater (not Opal) project at home for several weeks now, I'm still in the process of getting the garage space sorted out in order to start work on the major items. I have a large double garage but the A7 shares the space with the Midget, a lathe and a small Mill so space is at a premium. This probably means that anything like engine out or body off chassis work is now going to have to wait till the spring when I can bear to put the Midget outside under a decent cover.

However being an impatient sort I've started to remove bite sized bits and pieces which can be overhauled and refurbished on the bench, the latest of which is the starter motor.
On disassembly of the motor I found a bit of a mess, everything is covered in what looks like thick copper grease, which I guess is dust from commutator / brushes.

I would guess that this stuff is quite conductive so I'd like to remove as much of it as is possible.
Is there something I can safely wash the area around the field coils out with?
I'm reluctant to use any strong solvents in case it adversely affects the insulation.

Any observations will be gladly received.

Many thanks,    .... Phil.

  Crack free Conrods
Posted by: Zetomagneto - 07-12-2018, 10:28 PM - Forum: Wants - No Replies

Hi, I am looking for 2 crack free conrods for a 2 bearing engine, ideally with good white metal and which can be resized to 1.280”.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help.
I have spare Conrods, but hoping to find some that can be resized rather than going to the expense of re whitemetal.
Many Thanks Gene

  King pin?
Posted by: Graham Honnor - 07-12-2018, 06:06 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Hello All

I wonder if someone called advise me please.
I have just stripped my kingpins on a Mk 11 Ruby axle and have discovered that
one has a hole all the way through the pin and the other one is sealed at the bottom.
Both have the threaded hole at the top but I was wondering which one is correct please.

Thank you for your time

Graham.

  Rebore on a mini-lathe!!!

Hi All

I'm beginning to look for a smallish and cheapish lathe. Several Drummond round bed lathes have come to my attention. They are early 1900s mini-lathes. I think they are too old for my use but what surprised me most was the reference to reboring an Austin Seven block on one!

  Brake Lights
Posted by: David.H - 05-12-2018, 05:31 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (9)

With brakes that are not (inter) connected! is it better to fit a brake light switch to the foot or hand brake? (or one to each? - that is getting a bit complicated for my lack of wiring skills.
My thinking is just to the footbrake as that is the "natural" brake & if you are hauling on the hand brake then the foot pedal will probably be on anyway!
Can anyone put up a simple wiring diagram for adding a brake switch please? I have nothing at the moment on the '27 Chummy nor the '29 RK!

  SMOKERS' HATCHES

Going a bit off subject, but re the smoker's hatch - mine is gone also.  I keep looking at the framing where it should be and have muttered about trying to make one.  All listeners to that have looked at me sideways and tapped the side of their head knowingly.  Am I mad to try?  I've only seen a few photos of them and they do seem to be a bid fiddly to make.  Maybe I should start a new discussion on this..

Discussion now starting!

What info do you have on smokers' hatches, Graham?  We've have two or three enquiries about them in the last couple of years, so it would be nice to be able to offer a passable solution.  Do you (or anyone else) know whether the smokers' hatches fitted to other "standard" saloon models were identical units?
