  Engine Stripdown
Posted by: PhilM - 15-02-2019, 06:35 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

I'm now well into the engine stripdown of my 1936 "Two seater"
When I  removed the two front crankshaft bearings I found that they were mounted with the two large faces of the inner facing the rear of the engine as in the picture, from what I understand these should be mounted "back to back". neither face on either bearing has the word trust on it, I presume the two large inner faces should be facing eachother??
If mounted like this the inners would be touching but there is a small gap, maybe 0.030" (not yet measured) between the outers
Can somebody please confirm this would be correct??

Also there is a small amount of damage on the bearing retaining lip, this was pre-existing, which I don't think will be an issue but again, as a beginner I'd welcome another opinion on this.

Finally, I'm having a problem removing the timing gear from the camshaft. I've removed the nut and thrower but the gear is reluctant to part with the shaft, I've tried a 2 legged puller and a litle heat but I'm reluctant to use too much force  for fear of breaking something.

Many thanks,    ..... Phil.

While checking out some door handle details on Ruairidh’s excellent
GE Register (LINK) I came across a pile of interesting NZ Cups
Plus an unusual photo supplied by Geoffrey
of a Cup with a puncture parked on the pavement at Buck House.
No guardsmen in sight but a few Bobbies as the driver
In the pouring rain uses a screw jack to change a rear wheel.

The car is slightly modified in that the headlamps appear
To be bolted to the wings, rather than the radiator cowl.
Not seen that before? No sidelights either? Last few made?
Great photo though, Thanks Geoff.

Ps I wonder if they would let me recreate the scene? -Smile

Definitive Answer on Oil In Gearbox Please
Posted by: mk1-mark - 15-02-2019, 10:21 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Hi, Please can someone give me a definitive answer on how much oil I should put in our 3 speed gearbox please?  It is used for competition mainly & I have read everything from 1/2 a pint to 2/3 of a pint.

We filled it with 2/3 of a pint last time & got a lovely oil leak.  The box has been rebuilt & the seals & gaskets changed since then, but it would be nice to know we aren't overfilling this time.

Thanks, Mark F

  Symptom of poor carburation?
Posted by: Ian M - 15-02-2019, 08:23 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Over the last few days, aided by some quite reasonable weather, I've spent many pleasurable hours working on my Mk1 Ruby. It had sadly languished in the back of my garage for several years, so I'm pleased that I've finally got to grips with it again.

One thing is troubling me and it's not something I can remember ever being an issue with this car before. The engine is quite worn, but still starts and runs reasonably well. However, I am now finding it very hesitant when opening the throttle from normal tickover. It will either stall or require very gentle application of the pedal before the revs pick up.

Any suggestions as to how I might troubleshoot this? I suppose it has to be something fairly rudimentary. Might it be advantageous to get my old carburettor reconditioned while I am at it? Many thanks.

  Hereford Speed Trials
Posted by: Steve kay - 14-02-2019, 10:41 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - No Replies

What I did today was to recce the Hereford Speed Trials in the Ruby.  Speed events, hillclimbs and sprints, had become very popular post WW1, there were nearly forty in 1924, most of which were on public roads. Security and crowd safety had made police, local authorities and organisers increasingly anxious, and when early in 1925 there was a minor accident at the Kop hillclimb, it was decided that it was time to stop such events on public roads.  By the time meetings in London of ACU and RAC had confirmed this, it was so close to the planned Hereford Speed Trials planned for 4th April that the organisers felt it was impossible to tell  competitors, stewards and marshals of the cancellation. Hurried meetings with the police, the Mayor and the Watch Committee led to local permission being granted to ignore the national cancellation and proceed with the event.
To celebrate this an wholly uncompetitive gentle tour of the course of the 1925 speed trial  along Whitacre Road, and the 1924 event at Rotherwas will be held on Thursday 4th April this year, to which all are invited.
Hereford  Speed Trials are referred to in the narrative of Tim Nicholson's Sprint book, and in distinguished  forum contributor Julian Hunt's Speed Explorer, but details require further research to find out about standing or flying starts, in which direction the event was run etc. All will be revealed to those who turn up!
The pictures show the timing line crossed for the flying start half mile. Grainy b&w picture from the local paper has a Morgan, possibly G.H. Goodall's which managed to be 2 secs faster than H.F.S. himself, who'd been victorious the previous year. The other image is of a Ruby, not even off the drawing board at Longbridge in 1925.
If you would like to know more or just want to put your name down for full final arrangements in due course please contact me; stevekaytwo@btinternet.com

  Three speed gearboxes
Posted by: Alan - 14-02-2019, 08:29 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

IDoes anyone know- are the gear sets and shafts in an early belt drive speedo box the same as in the later version with speedo drive.  I’m guessing the gears are the same but the 3rd motion shaft is different?

Just how good should the brakes on my Ruby be?
Posted by: Denis Sweeney - 13-02-2019, 07:09 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (60)

This may be an impossible question to answer, but not having any previous experience in driving my Ruby I am not sure if the brakes are simply as good as they can get for an A7 or do I have a serious problem.
In trying to find some answers I looked back over some old papers and found an article called Braking Efficiency published in the Austin Magazine dated 1936, the year of my Ruby.
In this it states “.......the Seven should be able to stop in 36 feet or less from 30 mph without skidding or pulling........Failure to stop in this distance can be taken as an indication that the brakes will benefit from from attention....”
Now I know without any doubt that my Ruby will go merrily past 36 feet before she will be brought to a stop.
I also have found an youtube a road test carried out on a late Ruby in which the braking distance when travelling at 30mph was 28 meters, which the presenter states is greater than the Highway Code requires of 23 meters.
Now these figures seem a lot closer to the performance of my own car.
The whole of my braking system has been upgraded but if 36 ft is the norm I am falling desaprately short, hence my question.
I did take my Ruby to an MOT for him to give her th once over before taking her out on a regular basis, he decided he would not put her on the roller to check the brakes, he said it would fail....!
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Best regards Denis S
