  Poly bushes in suspension?
Posted by: Darren D - 16-03-2019, 09:27 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi guys,

In the middle of a much needed suspension overhaul and I was thinking about improving the handling and long term reliability with poly bushes in the leaf springs.

Anybody else done this? If so how do you find the handling? Any help and advice as always very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Darren

  numbers on engine blocks
Posted by: richard tatton - 16-03-2019, 02:11 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Hi I have no problems with the numbers for cars, chassis and engines but I can't seem to find information that tells me what the numbers stamped onto the engine blocks mean and how they relate to dates of the blocks. Some have AF3 or AF4. What does 1 A 504 then AF4 29.11.5 on my block translate to? There is also a plate on it stamped M238549 which I presume was a related engine number but no longer matches. The head is stamped 1A38 M4 and AF1 and I have various heads with other numbers.
I can see that my head, block and crankcase must probably come from 3 different cars!
I've looked in most of the usual books and can find next to nothing on these stampings.
I'm sure someone will have the answers!!!!
Regards and thanks Richard

  Suitable horns

The horn on my Ulster rep whilst looking fairly new just offers a quiet peep. My first foray into all things 6 volt....am I expecting too much or are there some decent six volt horns about. My searches so far haven’t unearthed anything!

Question Ruby Fuel Tank Sender Unit Problems
Posted by: DaveT - 15-03-2019, 02:55 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

I have a problem with Fuel Tank Sender Unit on my 1935 Ruby.

The float was found to be part full of fuel and the arm on the sender unit snapped when removing the float. (That’ll teach me for being heavy handed) Angry

So the question is has anyone ever replaced the sender unit with a modern equivalent or can you still source original replacements.

Also does it matter if it’s 6v or 12v as it’s only a rheostat that produces the reading?

I don't fancy resorting to a stick down the filler to check the level.

Any and all ideas gratefully accepted.

Zenith 26VA Carb slow running jet
Posted by: John Mason - 14-03-2019, 09:19 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Hi all, I have had and still got carburettor problems on my Mk1 1935 Ruby. Having checked the exploded diagram for this carb I realise I am missing the small fibre washer for the slow running jet. Can any one advise me the size of this washer also does it fit at the bottom of the opening with the jet screwed down on top or does it fit along the length of the jet to seal things at the top. It would be helpful also if anyone knows the inside and outside diameters so I can make a washer.

John Mason.

  Speedex IFS information please
Posted by: John Bonnett - 14-03-2019, 08:10 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

I'm thinking about using something along the same lines for the Special that I am about to embark on and would appreciate any information and particularly photographs that would help me construct the IFS.

I would also like to hear from your experience, the pros and cons of the system please.

With many thanks

John

Classics in Town, Burgess Hill

Popular local event in Burgess Hill, Sussex from 10.00-16.00 with cars bikes and commercials from 1900 to 2016. Only requirement is that they are classics or design classics (such as the Supercars in the Fast and Furious section). No cost for anyone, just donations to our charity the Chailey Heritage Foundation.

Fancy bringing a vehicle, let me know on events.wcvc@gmail.com we are keen to make it to 150 vehicles this year. Arrivals for exhibitors at 9.00 in Cypress Rd car park so we can be in place for 10.00 and ‘grande depart’ at 15.30.

This is an event for enthusiasts of all sorts so has a great informal atmosphere.

Cars off the road long term and SORN.
Posted by: Hedd_Jones - 14-03-2019, 07:05 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

Just a word of warning for those of you with vehicles off the road long term, but have registration documents in your name.

I recently had cause to put a vehicle, that has been off the road since the late 1980's in my name. Specifically changing keeper on the V5.

Today I recieved a snotty letter in the post requiring me to 'Immediatley' tax or SORN the vehicle. And that I was at risk of a fine.

Unfortunatley for the DVLA they got a snotty me on the end of the phone. Whilst discussing my problem, and without asking me the lady at the DVLA sorned my vehicle. This in my belief was an unlawful act, as only the registered keeper can declare SORN.

At that point she got both barrells. The legal situation is that vehicles that were not taxed at the point of the law requiring a SORN being enacted, and that have not been taxed since that date do not need to be SORN ed. They also do not need to be taxed assuming that they are still off the road.

I quite calmly but sternly asked her to check with her superiors, and after a 15 minuite wait she returned and confirmed my assertions.

I then insisted she remove the SORN from the vehicle.

I shall be watching the DVLA vehicle check website with interest over the next fortnight to ensure that my instructions have been carried out.
