10,000 hours |

Reading a book presently that mentions 10,000 hours commitment as being the primary factor in mastery. i.e. persistence rather than absolute skill. Applied to things like musicians, concert pianists etc... i.e. a lot of practice needed in a very short period of time when young. It struck me that this figure will be far exceeded in the Austin 7 world by those who have been tinkering for 50 years! But what do you estimate your active tinkering time has been, over your lives lived so far? And at what point did you notice a change, if any, in it becoming "easier", or perhaps seeing things from a different standpoint?

My 1932 RN is pretty bog standard with a 22FZB mazac carburettor except that I have a 4 blade export fan. Living in SW France, we get both hot weather and challenging roads. Today, its only about 14 deg C, but climbing a 6mile long hill in second for most of the way was a not an uncommon challenge. Towards the top the engine started to miss a bit, but we made it and popped back into top gear and the engine cooled down a bit. When the engine misses, I am pretty sure its down to vaporisation. The radiator is newish, the head and block all clean, ignition sounds about right but never been able to check the dwell angle of the points.
The RN has a front tank gravity feed that gets pretty warm from the engine heat.
Any ideas how to cure this ?

Are there other standard SWB tourers out there with other than two piece screens please? Wanted to explore whether there are original variants, perhaps abroad, as well as those cars which may have converted screens.
Any information you can yield?

Windscreen iron |

Good evening
One of the windscreen side irons has fractured at the top body securing screw on my 27 chummy. I cannot see how to remove the iron.
How is the side iron fixed to the lower section of screen. I can see it is attached but would the screw be inside the screen channel or is it from the outside and now painted over.
I hope I don't have to remove the glass from the channel first.
Many thanks.
Adrian.

front wheel alignment when you can't move track rod ends |

I did a quick check on the wheel alignment and it seemed to be toe'd in by about 1.5-2"! So great hopes for it going even better next time out!
I got the cotter pins out (big nut over the far end and squeezed the undone cotter nut with a G clamp) and on releasing the ends there was no sign of movement even with a little 12" rod put through the clamp bolt holes.
So it all came off.
Wirebrushed the paint off the ends. sprayed with WD40 stuff. Blowtorch heated ends. brushed on some diesel. heated again then put on more diesel. put in vice, and put rod through the clamp bolt holes enough to give 2" to hammer/turn. After considerable time, they both loosened.
I found they had both been shut down entirely (with clamp bolts both loose)
Will reassemble with grease and then next, attempt to get 1/8" toe in.
But... could there have been a reason for adding far more toe in intentionally?

Good evening.
Is there any way to work out the age of an engine from its engine number? I am sure that I found something about this recently, but cannot recall where.
Thank you.
Jamie.

Thought I'd let everyone know some of what we are doing.
10 years ago I bought a replica Ulster body from a customer. He had owned it for 20 + year. And the owner before him bought it new some 12 year plus. So we can work it out to be well over 40 years old. And it had never been fitted to a car.
The body is one of the first made by Ray pettit.
I've had a lot of nice parts ive collected up over the years, including an original steering wheel.
And last year I managed to buy a rolling chassis and engine, mainly built by TIM MYALL, at the old pigsty works. Plus the gearbox being built up by don rawson.
As I don't have enough spare time, we sent it all up to friends in SCOTLAND last year to be built up.
Here is a picture of the parts ive shown before on the forum. trailered up, heading north.

We collected the car at the weekend.
In the usual stormy, rain, snow, sleet. You name it weather.
And here is the car back home.
Ready for us to finish our work on it.
