Fitting Phoenix cranks into early engines...
Posted by: Ruairidh Dunford - 15-01-2018, 09:22 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (15)

Has anyone successfully modified a post forward facing starter motor flywheel to fit onto a phoenix shaft in an engine originally designed for an 1 1/8" crank?

I see the thickness and lack of cover plate register as possible stumbling blocks...

  Lessons in patience

Ok... So this is how I saw it... Im driving along at 30 in a 30 limit and yet another twit in a modern overtakes when he doesn't need to. He hovers about then pulls in front then eases back forcing me to slow, pulls across to another lane to turn right and slows again... As I draw level, he changes his mind (indicates) and pulls back in front of me. A theatrical blast from the klaxon does little to vent my annoyance as I am forced to brake a second time to allow him space to get back in... We stop 100 yards later at the next lights and I take the opportunity to hop out and peer in through his driver's door window... What kind of idiot are you? Don't you think you need to show me the same respect as any other motorist?

Then I get back in...

He probably only wanted to give his family a better look at the quaint little old car...

So I'm looking for recommendations for an anger management therspist in Essex. Undecided Big Grin Confused Sad

  Jim Stringer’s new Austin book...
Posted by: Ruairidh Dunford - 14-01-2018, 10:01 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Jim Stringer writes:

“On the subject of my forthcoming book, which is due to be published on 16th February, there is a lot of information regarding its contents on Amazon or on the Waterstones website. The price so I have been advised will be £14.99.
The book is a collection of stories all of which are somehow connected with Austin, and includes The Whippet bi-plane, The Kensitas Car, what happened to the 12/4 taxis once they left the ranks..the murder at the Austin village, the Austin Unity Song, George Clarke and his performing Austin Seven, the 1914 Alpine Trial, and many more (19 in total) and yes, the Austin Seven is also covered in addition to the story about George Clarke..”

  Towing
Posted by: Thowdfella - 13-01-2018, 03:20 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (37)

I need to make a 200 mile trip and am not keen on driving in the Austin and then 200miles back. I wondered if anyone could advise if towing it with an A frame is satisfactory. I have checked and the weight of the Austin means that braking is not required. If so, then how do you attach it to the Austin.

  Cannot slowdown tickover
Posted by: A7novice - 13-01-2018, 02:37 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

Advice Please.
I have just rebuilt engine for 1933 RP.

Runs very well etc except for two minor problems.
I would welcome any suggestions from people more experience and knowledgeable than myself regarding these two issues.

1) The tickover is a little too fast. The slow running stop is screwed so there is no contact with the operating leaver, ie that is not the cause of the fast idle. Similarly, when choke is fully off, the screw that bears on the choke leaver that opens the throttle is also not in contact, so again, that cannot be the cause of the fast idle.
The only way I can slow down the tickover to a more reasonable speed is by retarding the ignition to almost TDC
Any ideas?

2) When revving fast, there is the (very) occasional spit back through the carb.
The plugs appear black, not wet, not sooty.
Again, any ideas how I can remove the spitting problem?

best regards
A7novice.
