  Motor cycle tyre remover
Posted by: Austin in the Shed - 20-01-2018, 04:36 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

Has anyone bought one of these to use on sevens ? Are they any good?
I always end up scratching up the paint/powder coat/stove on the rims when doing them manually.
I thought about making one but they're only around £75 on ebay.

spring beaulieu what do you think
Posted by: Tony Betts - 20-01-2018, 01:57 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (19)

Would like to know what you all think on this one out there?

As Spring beaulieu prices have rissen yet again to £78.00. I'm wondering if it's really worth taking austin 7 spares to this event.

(For ME) last year as a trader, I sold very well on signage, tins and automobilia. I also done well on vintage NON austin 7 spares.

But when it came down to the austin 7, I counted maybe 15 austin 7 owners? And must say austin 7 parts sales were poor, and what did sell was mainly secondhand parts.

If I don't take the 8 trays of austin 7 spares I usually take, I can just book one stall instead of two. And save myself £78.

What do you think? Are you bothered about seeing austin 7 parts at autojumbles. Or with NEW spares would people just leave it to pre-orders being collected at shows.

I got the beaulieu paperwork this morning, and will return it in a couple of weeks. So would love to here what you think before I make my decision.

Thanks Tony.

A7 Underslung chassis or Drop Frame
Posted by: Jim Blacklock - 20-01-2018, 01:10 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Dear Each and All

I recently came across some letters, written in1932,  from A.P. Compton & Co. Ltd., of Arrow Coachworks, Boston Road, Hanwell, W7. to one of their customers, Norton Bracey Esq., of Weybridge.

In the letter of 21st March 1932, A.P Compton refers to Mr Bracey's interest in "the Arrow 4-seater as fitted to the super sports underslung chassis  and that you would like to inspect one of these cars when we have one available.".  The letter goes on "We would advise you that we only build this body to the Austin 7 underslung chassis to special order and as it is not a production job with us it is rather difficult to advise you when you may inspect one."

In the letter of 1st April 1932, from A.P. Compton, which is confirming Mr Bracey's impending visit to the Arrow Coachworks, the following is the final paragraph - "We would mention that if you manage to get here between 11.0 and 12.0 noon you would be able to see a Arrow Foursome body mounted on the same type of chassis in which you are interested, namely the Austin 7 underslung sports, as we have one which has been returned for fitting some extras and the client is collecting it tomorrow about midday."

In a letter from Messrs. Hattons Ltd., 665/667 Lord Street, Southport, to A.P Compton & Co. Ltd., they are really enthusiastic about the "Arrow Sports four seater on the drop frame Austin 7 h.p. unsupercharged chassis as supplied to their client".

None of these particular version of the Austin 7 Arrow Sports Foursome now exist.

I am really not sure what a "drop frame Austin 7 unsupercharged chassis”  is, or "an Austin 7 underslung chassis” - can anyone please explain what these chassis were and what Austin 7 models they were used for.

Regards
Jim Blacklock

  Starts, then dies
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 19-01-2018, 01:59 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (9)

It is a feature of several of my 7s that, from cold and with the choke knob fully out, they will start very smartly, run cleanly for perhaps 5 seconds, and then die away and stop. Operating the throttle makes it die immediately. Wait a couple of seconds, start up again, same thing. This will happen three or four times and then, at last, they will continue to run happily and everything is normal. Other 7s with the same setup will start and run immediately.

I always manually pump fuel up to fill the float bowl prior to starting - which is what it initially runs on of course. All use 26VA Zenith carb.

Any clues as to why this happens? Is it a fuel pump issue?

  Wing supports for Ulster Rep.
Posted by: Erich - 19-01-2018, 04:24 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (15)

I've got an Ulster Rep with front wing supports that worked fine before the 17" wheels were changed for 19" wheels.Though they've been modified, there are still clearance issues when the front spring is compressed and the wheels are turned. Can anyone provide photos of their front lower wing supports? I realize that there was likely no standard conversion for genuine Ulsters, and maybe only the works TT cars had any set design.

Erich

To be specific, these are the supports at the rear(bottom) of the front wings.

Reading so many differing opinions on fitting an electronic ignition to my 1933 Box Saloon.
Its got a Bosch distributer.
Although it takes an age to start, once started and warmed up it runs great.

  Bonnet weather strip
Posted by: Erich - 18-01-2018, 05:24 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (4)

I just received some bonnet weatherstrip from one of the cherished suppliers. Well made and the correct size but the material is vinyl. Assuming the originals were rubber, does anyone have a source for the correct rubber weather stripping that uses staples to affix on the cowl and the scuttle?

Erich in Seattle.
