Rear axle droning noise |

A few months ago I obtained a late D-type rear axle and overhauled it prior to fitting it to my car. New bearings and seals all round. I set up the CWP adjustment according to Woodrow and everything else I could glean elsewhere.
During the overhaul I found that the pinion shaft had considerable end float and the crown wheel has run-out (sorry, I can't recall the figures for each).
After installing in the car the axle appeared to work well. The only negative thing is a droning noise at a steady 35/40 mph with light throttle. It doesn't happen when accelerating or on trailing throttle.
Can anyone suggest what may be causing this, and point me towards what I should be looking for before I tear it all to pieces again?
I had not driven the axle before I bought it, so I don't know if it made this noise before the overhaul. I suppose it is possible that, if it had previously been used for a long time with the pinion end float, the CWP gears might have worn unnaturally. Perhaps it is the effect of the crown wheel run-out and I shall just have to live with it.
My previous axle didn't make this noise, nor did any of the A7s I have owned before, so I know it is not right.
It would be great if I could adjust the mesh of the CWP and eliminate the noise, but I guess that would be a tricky operation with the axle on the car.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

How warm and cozy ? |

The S'no Fun thread is great and its very cool to see the cars out in the snow.
Having not had the pleasure of driving my Seven yet I really have no idea of what the experience would be like in the snow with the cold temperatures that go with it. So while driving our older Volvo to another city in winter conditions (blowing snow and minus 15C temps) I starting wondering about how Sevens cope with the cold etc. and if there were any creature comforts.
- Just how warm does a seven get?
- How are you all coping with the mist/ frost on the windows?
- Since the car doesn't have a heater would there be a practical way to produce heat for the interior?
- Has anyone fitted or come up with a heater installation that works without modifying the car that it can't be returned to its previous state?
I know this all sounds rather elementary, but I am just curious. The idea of being in a nice cozy seven while driving in the snow is appealing.
Cheers Stephen

Hi just got round to fitting speedo cable on my Pd, but unsure of routing. Don’t seem to be able to fit without it catching somewhere. Can anyone advise, or is there a PD owner somewhere in South Yorkshire who is willing to let me have a look at their car?
Thanks. Kevin.

I'm going to be removing the rear wheels on my Ulster rep and wonder what others do when using a trolley jack to lift the rear of the car. I'm rather reluctant to use the diff housing as I would on a modern. Can a beam be laid across the jack to hit the frame rails without fouling the prop shaft? I just need it jacked up enough that I can put jack stands under the axle, unless there is another recommended placement for the latter.

In Spring 1931 Rupert Harding-Newman, an officer in the Royal Tank Regiment, drove an Austin Seven from Egypt (?) overland to England to attend a course at Bovingdon Camp. R.H-N went on to be a founder member of the LRDG, a Major-General, and died in 2007 in his 100th-year. Does anyone know the details of the route and the car (photos)?

Tappet cover gasket |

I have a block (M163594) fitted with the later cover with a triangular groove for the gasket. The cork replacement is square section....do I have to attack it (carefully) and trim it to a triangular section or (unlikely I think) if I fit it over the groove and hope it stays in place and is squeezed into place....I don't think it will fit with the square section angled into the groove & the opposite angle forming a seal of sorts against the block
Can it be softened to force it into the groove?
Is it the wrong part?
When I removed the tappet cover it had the remains of both a carbonised gasket in the groove together with a flat gasket around the periphery of the tappet chest.
David
