  Easter Run
Posted by: Bryan - 02-04-2018, 07:06 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (11)

was a fantastic sunny day so took the Chummy for a run. Sadly 20mms from home she broke a half shaft.

Question- as I’m going to have to find a replacement would it be better to replace both now with new ones?

No Body ? Why Not Build a Tank ?
Posted by: Steve Bryant - 01-04-2018, 09:02 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

It seems that there are a fair number of body-less chassis out there that the owners would like to clothe  with some form of coachwork.  Since the chassis seems to be fairly easily restored  and bodies  not so easily - give some consideration to this suggestion.

If you study the lower photo carefully you'll see that the  basis for the "Panzer training tank " is in fact a BMW DIXI chassis -scuttle unit that the various parts simply drop onto and are secured by some simple means.

One could easily do the same thing on an Austin Seven chassis  and have something uniquely original with some basis of authenticity albeit a mirror image. Could be a fun project.
Cheers,
Stephen

PS: this is not a April fool joke.

Friends' Gallery Picture of the Month - April 2018

April Fool's Day, so we'd better have a bit of a joke!

The 1958 Cambridge University Senate House Stunt:

Twelve University undergraduates pulled off this stunt in late May, 1958. They found the derelict van in Harston, and towed it into Cambridge parking it outside the Senate House, stickering it up with posters for the May Ball. Overnight on the 8th June the van reappeared on the roof as seen in our photo! Officially the culprits were never identified, but the Dean of Caius College sent a congratulatory case of champagne to the appropriate 'staircase' ...

The ringleader, Peter Davey, is seen here in a photo taken the next day:

According to legend, the authorities were unable to remove the van in one piece, and had to dismantle it in situ using oxy-acetyline equipment; however, this sequence of photos suggests otherwise:

I have occasionally posted links to the Amicale de Tricyclecaristes de France when interesting pieces have appeared .
Today there has been an announcement  that the site may close because there is insufficient activity from members and visitors.
The have put out a call of "Mayday" to try to encourage use of the site and participation in its content from interested parties who may be unaware of its existence and value.
Although some may be put off by the lack of language Google translate makes any problem disappear at the click of a mouse.
The link below is to the recent Welsh LV trial which no doubt will appear  elsewhere also. However, if you have the interest, your participation and especially registration and contributions to the forum would be appreciated and may  help to preserve an invaluable resource.

  Easier/quicker gear changes

When I approach a corner at speed in my Ulster rep I want to change down from 4th to 3rd to take the corner quickly. However it won't go into 3rd. I'm guessing it won't go in because the revs are still high. Anything I can do about that? I do like to drive the car hard!!
Cheers

  Ecurie Ecosse Sevens
Posted by: Albert S - 01-04-2018, 08:44 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

Somewhile ago i brought an album of photographs, ostensibly for photos of a car which had nothing to do with Sevens. Within its pages was a glimpse into the efforts of a group of young guys working out of what's look to be four lock up garages to build, what look to be, a couple of very professional looking Seven specials.
Hopefully these photos will harvest some history of the project and what eventually happened to the cars and the guys who built them, bear with me as I free the images, they have bonded themselves into the album mounts ,hope you enjoy them.

  Front axle/steering wobble
Posted by: Hedd Jones - 31-03-2018, 10:19 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

This last week, the RP has had a fair bit of use.

One odd thing that has happened twice now is that i have had to drive over pot holes as i brake onto a junction. This put the front of the car into a very odd wobble. Almost like the axle is oscellating on the spring shackles. This then sets the steering wheel wobbling also.

Ive studied all components carefully and can find no faults

Its a semi girling axle.

Does anyone have any ideas?

King pins are less than 1000mile from being done.

The steeringg box has bugger all play.

Front bearing removal tool 1 1/2" crank
Posted by: Steve Berg - 30-03-2018, 09:38 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - No Replies

Has anyone made a front bearing removal tool as on page A5-7 of  the Austin Seven Manual but for a 1-1/2" pressure-fed crank? The web of this Speedy crank is wider than a standard crank and the standard tool as shown would not be able to push against the inner ball races. The short semi-circular recesses in the crankshaft allow only space for a drift at an angle to the crank shaft, or maybe for a modified bearing removal tool.
Otherwise I suppose I shall just use the time-honoured method of knocking out the bearing with a brass drift.

  Mouse mats

Apologies if this has been mentioned before and I have no connection with the seller only that my wife bought me one recently .......

These mouse mats are rather nice  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-7-Mous...Cy-QFrtOSQ

The 1938 Big Seven Sixlite one I received  was even the correct colour. Big Grin

They are not particularly cheap but are excellent quality and must be of interest to Seven enthusiasts?

extra plumbing in head and washers
Posted by: steve davidson - 30-03-2018, 10:42 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Hi all,

I've recently come in to possession of a new head that is different to any I've seen before.  Along with the spark plug tapping there is an extra tapping in to each cylinder, I understand that these were done to facilitate the addition of a little extra fuel in to each pot during cold starting.  In my case each of the 4 holes have been plugged with a nice brass washer complete with an odd “sandwich washer”.  The washer has copper on both faces and something in between, see attached photograph.

A few questions;

1)   Does anyone have a photo of one of these heads set up with the taps to allow the extra fuel addition?

2)   Can anyone advise what this type of washer would be called and what material is sandwiched between the copper?

3)   Unless I can find something better I though the existing washers could be replaced by copper crush washers, thoughts?
