Voltage at Coil Terminals - Help Please
Posted by: John P - 18-06-2018, 08:22 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (24)

Hi,

I've been trying to resolve an ongoing starting problem and have now, I think, eliminated the carb so turned my attention back to the ignition.

Today I checked the voltage across the battery terminals which was 6.1 volts.   Not sure how good this is but the car hasn't been run much for some months due to the starting problems.

If I measure the voltage between the coil SW connection and a know earth I also get 6.1 volts but if I measure the voltage between the SW and CB terminals on the coil I only get 4.8 volts.

I thought the CB terminal was connected to earth when the points were closed so had expected it to be something like the 6.1 volts.   I have crudely tried connecting a wire between earth and the points and also between earth and the distributor body but it's still just 4.8 volts.

Am I misunderstanding things or should I get nearer to the 6.1 volt figure?   I take it that if there's a reduced voltage here it will also be proportionally lower on the HT side.

Any suggestions / advice,

John.

  Tourer hood "peak" woodwork
Posted by: SJH123 - 18-06-2018, 08:02 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

David Nightingale thinks my AH tourer has a non-standard wooden "peak" to the front of the hood.

I have said I could make it right, if need be.

David thinks the front edge is a lot thinner than standard.

The peak is still attached, so measurements are not exact:   44.5 " overall width,  4" deep,  15/16" thick at the rear,  bevelled down to 1/4" at the front and 11/16" at the sides.

If you have one of these cars and could give me an idea of your "peak"s measurements, you would be welcome to claim a pint (beer or oil) if we meet one day.  Wink

Thanks

"Slack Alice" Simon

  New Ruby spare fuel can...

I asked Andrew Goodfellow to make me a spare fuel can that would fit under the bonnet of my Pearl - it arrived today and I am quite delighted.

Distributor spindle tolerances; original and accuspark comparison
Posted by: JonE - 18-06-2018, 05:57 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (24)

I've just compared my new accuspark distributor unit and a good DK4A, and if I grasp the central spindle, I can't move the Lucas - it rotates nicely but there is obviously an extremely good fit in the bearings.

There is a discernable sideways movement in the NEW unit. Its good and loose, but if I grasp it, I can make it move 1/2mm or so from its axis, enough for it to make a slight noise. i.e. its just generally "a bit more loose".

Is that a normal tolerance for this sort of unit? i.e. what do others' new units do please?

new panel, perfect fit... (but not for my car which has a more non-standard floor than I'd previously thought!)

also have a pre-used SWB "narrow" halfshaft spare.. an ideal emergency spare.

pm for more details.

  Smiths Speedometer Body

Does anyone know of a supplier of new bodies for the mazak bodied speedos, an internet search produced no results.
I have a complete silver faced speedo with a trip mechanism, but no body for it.

  Float level Zenith updraught Carburettor
Posted by: john williams - 18-06-2018, 12:15 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

I remember an article in the "Grey Mag", a few years ago, written by someone from Holland, on how to measure the float level on the Zenith updraught carb'. I have searched all the Magazine Index, but can find no reference to this article. Anyone recall the article? I cannot get my float level correct by trial and error, and washers under the needle valve.

  Starter pull cable?

This is more curiosity than anything else, but could someone tell me what kind & gauge of wire/ cable was originally used to operate the forward-facing starter? Thanks.

  Steering Side Tube
Posted by: David.H - 17-06-2018, 10:34 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (14)

My steering arm (the one on the car) has worn ends & I have bought end kits to make them tighter. There are a couple of problems with putting in the new parts
1. Getting the ball pins out (I don't have access to a press)
2. Getting the half cups out of the tube. As far as I can see they are pushed into the tube up to a step? After 86 odd years they are not keen to leave their ancestral homes. Penetrating fluid, judicious heat; they don't want to come out. I am concerned that dropping the tube onto a hard surface to encourage them to drop out will end up damaging the tube. It is relatively weak because of the cut outs.
various shims & hard thick distance pieces have dropped out of the end caps presumably to increase the spring pressure, they do not feature in the parts list. Do I put them back or keep them for future use (instead of replacing the spring perhaps!!)
Any ideas?
David

What size of the above would I need to encompass every three legged pulling job I might ever need on an austin 7, please?
(first, possibly need to remove carden type torque tube end to try putting a later prop adaptor on....)
thanks
