Another stupid question - Clutch & Oil
Posted by: mk1-mark - 30-01-2019, 11:54 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

First, Thanks for all the help recently, it is much appreciated.

My lad managed to get the clutch changed over Christmas & all seems to be working very well indeed.  He has however noticed that there is now a fairly considerable oil leak coming from the gearbox / clutch housing area.  We have both read up on this both using the search & elsewhere & have determined that he has either;

A) Overfilled the gearbox.  He used the specified 2/3 of a pint.  Where as people seem to be recommending just 1/2 a pint.  Is this correct?

B) Damaged a seal around the 1st moting shaft of the box.  Is this easy to do?

As a plan of action is is worth emptying & re filling the gearbox to just 1/2 a pint & seeing what happens or should we pull it to bits again sharpish to avoid saturating the clutch plate with oil?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Fitting battery to Mk1 Ruby battery box
Posted by: Ian M - 29-01-2019, 04:37 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Having replaced the battery in my Ruby for the first time in years, I am reminded of a couple of queries I have in relation to how the battery fits inside the box on the bulkhead.

First thing is that the all batteries of the correct type I have deployed over the years are never quite tall enough in my view. Consequently, I always bolster the height by using approximately 1" of packing underneath, which allows the starter motor cable to enter the hole near the top of the box and terminate on the battery post in a nice straight line. Have others found this too? In my picture, the battery is seen at the default height, with packing yet to be installed.

Second thing is that I have never identified any means to anchor the battery so that it cannot move about at all. The battery cables seem to do a reasonable job of keeping it in place, but surely there must have been a more satisfactory arrangement originally. Many thanks.

Seeking tips for making good quality battery cables
Posted by: Ian M - 29-01-2019, 04:22 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

In another thread, I spoke of some steps taken to put my Ruby back on the road, with it having languished at the back of the garage for a few years. Whilst assessing all the jobs that I aspire to carry out by means of improvement, the battery cables came under scrutiny. These are modern replacements, but manifestly not in the same league as the originals. When you've only got 6 volts to play with, the thickness of cables and the quality of terminations is obviously an important consideration.

Below is a picture of what I understand to be the factory original cable from the battery to the starter, condemned because the insulation has naturally broken down over time. The cable is of a decent thickness and the terminals at both ends appear to be soldered. I'm interested to know how others have tackled the business either of creating good quality battery cables, or if there are any recommended specialists who can supply a quality finished product to order. Many thanks.

  Bernard Griffiths - RIP

Many of you will be familiar with Bernard, the A7CA's long term Events Calendar and Projects Coordinator, his name inside the front cover of the "grey mag" for many decades.

Conversations with Bernard were never dull, his pet donkeys, cars, hurdy-gurdys and smocks to name but a few pet topics!

He suffered a fatal heart attack last Friday.

No more will salutations from the Chief Eccentric, beautifully crafted in ink from his beloved "quill pen", land on my door mat!

One less character to make the world a more interesting and happy place.

  Items for the Archive
Posted by: Archive Project - 28-01-2019, 04:13 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

As many of you will be aware, the Archive of the Austin 7 Clubs' Association has been more pro-active in acquiring items for the collection in the past couple of years or so. The profile of the Archive has been raised as a result of the digitisation project and now people around the world are able to access the collection on line. We have a member of the Project Team specifically tasked with monitoring Ebay and other areas to spot suitable items. Recently, the Association has missed out on a couple of important items - a remarkable Military brochure in Argentina and then a very early 'Motor for the Millions' poster in Germany. In the case of the poster, we made a what we decided was a healthy last minute bid of some €400, but were outbid and the Military brochure was listed at a breathtaking £1400 (or equivalent), a number of us were discussing what we could make as a realistic offer when it was sold.

The Association has recently had two remarkable donations specifically to fund the Archive, £600 from the Midshires group of the Pre War A7 Club and an extraordinarily generous £2600 donation from the VAR of New Zealand. This gives us scope to make purchases of more significant items, though we obviously must not be profligate and make sure every penny is thoughtfully spent.

The point of this post is to ask if any of you happen to see anything 'special' that you think the Archive might be interested in acquiring, could you perhaps drop a note to archivist@a7ca.org and/or archiveproject@a7ca.org pointing it out. Similarly, if you have anything in your own collection that you think might be of interest that you might be prepared to loan for digitising, or better yet, you might consider a donation, you can be safe in the thought that it can be preserved for posterity and shared amongst fellow owners around the world..

thank you..

  Grease gun?
Posted by: Tom Coates - 28-01-2019, 12:02 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (9)

I still have the original grease nipples on my car, will a modern clip on gun work on them or is it best to get an original Enots push on one?

I see they are quite common on Ebay for about the same price as a cheap modern gun although inevitably you take a gamble on what condition they are in.

I've used my Dad's up to now, but planning to bring the car over to France for Montlhéry so need my own kit!
