  Headlamps
Posted by: David.H - 03-01-2019, 11:24 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Can anyone suggest headlamps the might be suitable for a 1932 AG? My originals (Lucas -Graves) are pretty battered & will require a fair bit of love & attention (not to mention a severe beating!) I am looking for a temporary solution that will not look too out of place. As the car was much modified/updated in the 60's & my restoration is taking it to how it probably was back then, something of that era would be ok. Any ideas?
There are all sorts of "Harley Davidson(sic)!" copies on ebay from about £12 ! (plastic shells!! one star response "useless!"), but I think I may be able to do better than that.

Question North West England Restoration Services
Posted by: worthidlj - 03-01-2019, 09:05 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (14)

Morning Peeps,

Hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and New Year holidays.

A lack of personal time/motivation/ sprog on the way I currently have an 1938 7 Chassis almost stripped (Rear Axle partially removed, front axle fully, a lot of surface rust) that I would like to pass to a service that can turn it into a roadworthy rolling chassis (with cleaned engine and gearbox bits so I can assemble/ modify it myself) and then put a sports body on it.

I'm based near Liverpool and where the National Rail Trials were held.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Cheers,
Dave

SU 1" - difference between jets?
Posted by: JonE - 02-01-2019, 11:05 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

Can anyone tell me if eyebolt and standard SU jets are interchangeable... and what the differences are between them?

I've got the parts from a UB to fit the OM (which better fits the standard Austin sidedraft manifold without simple adapter), but I note my present jet is an eyebolt one.

  Distributor failure identified
Posted by: Andy Bennett - 02-01-2019, 07:07 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Further to my earlier post about my lack of spark, I thought I would round off the story as I don't like not knowing what went wrong as it usually means it will happen again.

Having got everything running with my old bosch distributor, I went back to the Accuspark unit and nothing, no spark, back to Bosch and all was good. At least I now knew I was looking at a distributor issue.

As a reminder this is an Accuspark unit bought in Sept 2017 and installed early 2018, it has covered fewer than 500 miles.

I have investigated and found that one of the weights is free. The result is that there is no advance and retard mechanism working, the spindle just freely slops backwards and forwards and rotates through the advance and retard allowance. This tied in with my first problems of a near misfire as I tried to start the engine.

I have attached 3 photographs.
The first shows the weights sitting incorrectly and not closing up under the springs.

The second shows the one weight working correctly and centralised having been pulled back in. I have annotated it with a note to the pivot point where the peg is secure).

The third is annotated to point out the pin (as on the previous picture) and the plate with the hole which should be located on the pin but is floating free allowing the weight to move around and the spindle to rotate freely.

The pin is not sheared. It is just proud of the surface and you can juggle the plate back to catch on the pin and then all appears to work fine on the spring return mechanism, and then it slips off again.

It might be that it has been in this precarious position since new and has just slipped off a pin that was simply too short. Or the pin may be a push fit into the weight and may have slipped down. I don’t want to take it further apart having spotted the problem.

It appears to need a new pin inserted and either secured properly or just a new pin of the correct length used so that the plate cannot slip off it.

I have contacted Accuspark and will let you know what happens.

New Year's Day at Barrington, Cambs

The traditional gathering on the village green at Barrington was very well attended with quite a number of Sevens in evidence. Good to meet with friends old and new and enjoy some fresh air.

Good evening.

Does anyone now whether the old Speedex website was ever relocated? I know that the Tiscali hosted site ceased last year, but I do not know whether it transferred to another host.

Regards,

Jamie.

While scraping away to find the Chassis number on the AD Chummy prior to sending papers off top the DVLA I find there are several ! One matches the scuttle plate, but the other is curious.
Any ideas?

A Non New Year run with no spark
Posted by: Andy Bennett - 01-01-2019, 02:26 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

Hi everyone
In wishing you a Happy New Year, mine has not started well.

I have 1933 Box running coil ignition, standard dynamo, with Accuspark distributor.

Having not run the car for some time I started her up yesterday with no problems.
This morning on getting ready for our New year day run, she turned over and then after a revolution almost stopped with a resistance and then turned over again, but did not start. This repeated. There was no backfire or clear misfire but it felt like she was trying to fire at the wrong point causing the ‘stopping’ of the engine.

Just to state that there was plenty of fuel.
I started working through the ignition. There was apparently no spark when holding lead off the plug or against decent earth.
Rotor was turning.
I changed the coil for a new one (not tested). This time the engine span freely with no ‘stopping’ but would still not start and no spark seen when removing a lead and putting lead close to plug.

It then briefly half ran as if on only 1 cylinder and really struggling.

I then replaced it with the original coil I took off about 8 years ago and which was working fine when last used. This time the tightening/stopping came back but still no spark.

I then took the Accuspark distributor off and replaced with the Bosch (again was fine when removed). Would not start, but when I played around with a lead on a head stud I saw a very faint spark. I could almost convince myself that I did not see it, but it was definitely there. But it was not enough to show any signs of starting. Tried new condenser, no change. Points opening fine.

There was 6V on the coil terminal with ignition on.

So I decided to stop there and think a while.
I realised that there was no discharge showing on the ammeter with ignition switch on. At rest ammeter was at 0A. When I put the lights on discharge was about 5A.
Looking at old posts on here it suggest that discharge with ignition on but not running should be around 6A. I should know, but I couldn’t say what it usually is, but not 0.

So is this my problem, whilst I have 6V from ignition at the coil, I have no current to drive it?
If so, where has it ‘gone’? The ignition switch clearly works to the extent that it supplies 6V to coil and switches the lights on and off.

Appreciate thoughts on whether or not I am on the right lines/looking at the right place (ignition switch, cut out?) and if so what the problem might be in the apparent resistance or breakdown and how I might hunt it down.

Appreciate thoughts from a very frustrated (non) driver for what would have been a lovely New Year run.

Andy
