  Cylinder head
Posted by: Tiger - 21-11-2018, 12:22 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (26)

My Ruby a non runner came with a low compression head.
I have read a few posts regarding improvements by fitting a high compression head.
Any comments

  dating pre-1929 cars
Posted by: JonE - 21-11-2018, 09:41 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

The Glasses book is around to date registrations of 1929 cars onwards.
Does anyone know whether there is another publication that covers the earlier ones please? Or if not what resources have this information, if any?
thanks Jon

  Dynamo
Posted by: Tiger - 20-11-2018, 11:37 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

Hello people
Anyone got any details for the C35M dynamo.
In particular the electrical connections.
Or any other info.
Woodrow brushes seem different to mine.
I have a case with field coils from a C35A are these the same ?

Also I think Woodrow shows a felt seal
Not fitted to mine or obvious place to fit ?
Regards

  Cadmium plating?
Posted by: Peter Naulls - 20-11-2018, 10:15 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (9)

Can anyone confirm the correct finish for the starter motor casing on a 3-bearing engine. Rinsey Mills book says cadmium plating which sounds plausible. If so, any recommendations? A Google search brings up lots of platers but no-one advertising cadmium.

Peter.

  Guess what this is

Does anyone know what this is ?
Its not specific to Austin, but you would know if you had bought your A7 brand new when it was built.

No prize for guessing correctly other than the honour.

Is Chummy ER 8727 still in America?
Posted by: Scarlet O'Hara - 20-11-2018, 05:10 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

Came across this photo of a Chummy and Rolls Royce at Glasgow docks taken in late 1963, both cars had been part of the John Cuthill Sword collection. I believe they were waiting for shipment to America after the auction sale of 7th September 1963, the seven was lot number 15 and the Rolls Royce lot number 109. Does any body know where ER 8727 ended up, it's not recognised by the DVLA and I don't think it's on the chassis register.

  Nippy rear springs
Posted by: "Slack Alice" Simon - 20-11-2018, 03:42 PM - Forum: Sales - No Replies

I have a pair of (as described to me) "new Nippy springs".

They have been fitted to a Ruby, to lower the suspension, but the car has never run anywhere with the springs.

Then it became an "abandoned project", left in a garage for several years.

The springs have a little surface rust where they project from the chassis, the ends inside the chassis were covered in grease and do indeed look new.

6 leaves and a packing piece, and about 2.5 inches of camber.

I don't need a new pair of Nippy springs, but I do need a pair of new or very good secondhand springs for a low chassis LWB tourer.

Money or swap - anyone interested?   If not, I will put them on an auction site.

Simon

  Ring-a-ding crankshaft
Posted by: cardiffrob - 18-11-2018, 04:07 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (21)

Would any kind soul be able to post a brief video that demonstrates the sort of sound one might find trying to make a crankshaft ring after being hit?  Not exactly NDT Science but I have several old cranks here and I noticed they all sound the same with neither a Crystal Wineglass ring nor a dull thud.  All cracked or all good?  Dinggggg, Dangg or Donk?  I have an excess of old blocks and crankcases that I need to sort through and am not sure if anything is really worth hanging onto.

Thanks.

Rob

After seeing the repro thing on sale a while back and coming across a road test, I also came across this - the John Sutton letter. How many of these things are known to exist and where can they be seen these days?
