Original ulster engine rebuild
#61
Not the easiest job without a milling cutter.

I've welded and ground the slot, and made a longer peg.

My grinding wasnt 100% accurate, and has pushed the lever slightly toward the driver.

Not a bad thing though.

Now it is done, this is how much movement I have.

I've had to lease the ball of to show how little play there is

Just the dynamo and distrib left.

The job I was looking forward to the least.

There is good movement in the rotor arm, so gears could be warn.

Also there is movement between the distrib and dynamo.

I may have to try and find a better dynamo end, this is the bit I dont like. Disterbing a good working dynamo.

"Which put me onto the problem most people have with the gear lever.
As shown below. The wear splayed out. And also the bolt.
For starters, the bolt wasn't really long enough. And with the lock washer holding out even further.
So the wear is right on the tip of the bolt."

As you have noted the slot in the ball wears badly giving an 'oval' groove. which you have repaired very nicely.

Outer surface of water casting looks to be as usual a bit rough so may cause slight weep without over tightening hose clip on hose.  I clean surface and smear with JB weld or similar to fill pitting then strip of abrasive to clean up to round and smooth surface.  Less pressure on hose clips to seal rubber to metal.

Hi Dennis, I see what you are saying.

Although the top water manifold isn't that bad, and if it does leak. It's an easy one to fix.

Also it doesnt look like I'm going to be ready for the austin 12 centenary on sunday.

The engine has fort me every inch of the way getting it back in the car.

This is how far I got as of this evening.

It's at times like that you wish you had a car with doors!

Not sure this helps you in any way, but this all sounds very familiar - you have my sympathy.

time for a break, and a drink.

i dont know how much doors help.

the startermotor was a fight. i even had to loosen the throttle linkage, so it went on easier. rather than trying to force things.

things are speeding up a little now, been out for a new oil filter. oil again, and antifreeze.

so the rad and surround is back on, filled. checked all ht leads etc.

just getting down to the exhaust and carb,

hi R.

sods law number 1, if it has one at some point it will give you a problem Huh
