A question of racing to while away a winter's evening

I'd add Surtees onto the grid. A practical guy that could ride or drive anything well.

And Mike Parkes.

Olivier Gendebien had a degree in agricultural & mechanical engineering, so he would be quite handy in the garage.

Well, my money is on young Mr Dunford. I think he has the rest beaten already.

12 days seems a bit generous to me.

I'm pretty sure there are several here that could put a car together in a couple of days if all the bits were there and laid out and a nice workshop was available.

I'm sure they could - but these two chaps have almost certainly never seen an A7 before and, of course, all the smaller bits would be presented jumbled up in a tea chest. The extra days are, of course, to tempt them into tacking some tuning using the lathes, milling machines, grinders and other stuff in the well-equipped workshop - that would be fun to watch.

I seem to recall a frantic re-build (in the snow) in the early hours for the Monte Carlo rally a few years back...

I second John Surtees, one of my heroes on two and four wheels, whom I never had the pleasure to meet.

For some reason Surtees seems underrated in both two and four wheel circles, although unique in having been world champion in both. He also won the Can Am championship and was a constructor and team owner of a team that won championships (although not in F1). I also like him because he was one of the few drivers that stood up to Enzo Ferrari and walked away from his lucrative Ferrari contract when Enzo started messing him about and swapping drivers around for political reasons.
