All four rods were cracked at the pinch bolt on my RP when I acquired it in 1971.

Much to consider, so thank you again!
I will keep this post and consult Woodrow again, keeping a list of all the tasks and order of work ready for winter. It doesn't seem such a daunting task having read the replies here! All my plugs were oiled up yesterday and the piston crowns I could see were well coated. Chris

It is curious that so many conrods are apparently fretting at the gudgeon hole. With the small pinch bolt subject to a repeated cycles of loadng would expect fatigue failure. Apparently seating of the bolt deteriorates so rapidly that movement of the eye can occur unrestrained. (A local member with a 6 had a rod split full length. It was welded to repair!)

Having just acquired yet another good crankcase with all threads sound, front lip intact and no cracks but it had been sandblasted and left for a few years. After removing all the oilway plugs I spent an hour with a pressure washer and washed a pile of sand out of it. This revealed enough sand for a play pit and the top face was heavily fretted at the front and rear nearside corners which is why a lot of Sevens leak at this joint. By the time I'd trued the face up the number had almost. disappeared.
