Insuring my modern….
#11
My choices are at the other end of the spectrum, seeing as I'm tighter than a submarine's window. I have 4 moderns all of which are only insured 3rd part + windscreen. The reason is that none of them are actually worth anything (other than to me). The "youngest" is 15 and the others are 24, 27 and 29 respectively. If they get damaged, they'll either be written off or I'll have to repair them myself, but that's a risk I'm prepared to take. The total I pay in premiums is a total of 720€ (£600) for all four, but it suits me.

The "secret" is to make sure you shop around well before renewal time. There is no value in customer loyalty these days.

I pay 50€ for the Austin but the cover is not as good as RH, I admit. Their deal is v good value.

French insurance by the way.

Despite reaching 90 years old just before the renewal date last month, mother in law has seen her premium go down from about £760 to £525. We had expected it to go through the roof!

According to Compare the Market, car insurance premiums have fallen by an average of 23% over the past year.

I was recommended to try Routen Chaplin last year, vintage, modern and property, for all insurances they have quoted for have been significantly cheaper than I have previously paid although a friend who’d got them to quote for his house insurance was higher.

Incidentally she also discovered that you can't call out the RAC by phone, only over the internet and, even more surprisingly, they wouldn't attend a breakdown on the dual carriageway as it was too dangerous.

Read recent reviews of the RAC - they are to be avoided at all costs. Lots of background data is available about who owns them, etc.

Many thanks for the very welcomed comments, loyalty to one’s insurance company has been mentioned and I have been guilty of this for too many years. I am an RAC member and have been for 50 years!! Touching many pieces of wood I’ve only ever had to call them out once……… about 48 years ago. I was also insured through them for about 30 years until one day the cost rocketed, on discussing it with there insurance agent I was basically told take it or leave it, no attempt to do anything, nice!
So I have again been with the same insurance company since leaving the RAC for the moderns until now, but the increases had been reasonable.
I have a couple of options which I will follow up and see how I get on.
As for the RAC breakdown service I must admit I have heard some horror stories myself and did see a survey a while back where the RAC did not rate very highly, interestingly with the Austin and MGF I have breakdown cover included with the insurers as well.
Thanks again to one and all for your posts

Every time I have renewed at RH for my A7 Box, they have asked when my modern was due and could they quote for it?

Recently I bought a new car (only the second time in more than 60 years of driving) for delivery in March - another diesel. I asked RH for a quote for the new vehicle. A little complicated as the Reg isn't known yet etc. but I knew the model accurately enough. The quote took a couple of days and was eye-watering at nearly twice some other quotes and hundreds more than LV who I am with at the moment. The best quote so far, still expensive, is from the manufacturers own insurance.

Perhaps nobody wanted my business.

I will have another hunt around with comparison websites once I have the car details.
