Insuring my modern…. - Denis Sweeney - 10-02-2025

Hi folks, a general query to one and all, I have just received my annual renewal statement for my “modern”, a 2020 VW Tiguan 1.5 which we purchased new and have only done 22000 miles in since.
There is an increase in premium this year of 39% which, whilst I know everything is going up up up, seems a little extreme.
Do any of you insure your moderns through specialist insurers like RHS which I have Ruby insured with or MGF which is insured through Lancaster Insurance.
Each time I insure  these oldies with these companies,  I always get asked about other vehicles in my possession but I have always stuck with the moderns insurers.
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers Denis S

I insure my Volvo with RH and have done for some years. I like the European breakdown cover. It may not be the cheapest available however. Depends on what you want your cover to be... My premium went up 15% on the Volvo this year and the Austin renewal, that I have just received, has gone up 10%

Seconded, Hugh. I too insure the modern car with RH and the European cover is a significant plus.
Because my Sprinter is a commercial vehicle (even though I don’t use it for commerce) I am obliged to use other insurers. I find that it is possible to arrange the European breakdown cover that I want for the van but there are added complexities. Obviously that’s not a problem for Denis.

Regards,

Stuart

I also insure my modern car with RH.

Me too. Though "modern" is a relative term.

I asked RH to quote for my modern a couple of years ago (before the takeover) but they were almost 3x my best quote. I find insurance prices vary hugely year to year for no apparent reason. I always shop around and often beat the renewal price by a large margin but not always. What service I would get if I needed to claim is a different matter.

As with most other things, you get what you pay for and I've always gone for reputable companies. A Discovery stolen from the drive was replaced by a slightly better one with a superior specification within two weeks.  When a few years ago, an 83-year-old fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on into me, my insurer paid up immediately with no questions asked - and with no argument about the car's value. In a similar but more deadly accident, a chap died at the wheel of his car and crashed into the side of my wife's. She was uninjured, but the trauma of the situation, as we tried to revive the driver, was considerable. We just reported the event to Saga, and within a day, a hire car was delivered; the damaged car was collected, repaired and handed back two weeks later. No exchange of letters, no phone calls, just perfect service. Saving a couple of hundred pounds a year might be appealing - until crunch time comes.

That is the problem, you never really know how good your cover is until you make a claim (and you are pointed to the small print...)

One thing I would definitely look out for are the 'Internet only' insurers. We made the mistake of going with one couple of years ago and then had a problem and needed to change some details. Trying to do this through chat bots is just a nightmare and they refuse to give you a phone number. I shudder to think what you might have to battle through in the event of a complicated claim. They are becoming ever more prevalent on the comparason sites. Oh and my modern car insurance has just gone up by 10%.

The chat bot thing is becoming a real problem. My wife was told by her insurers recently that she would need to pay £30 if she wanted to talk to a person.

Incidentally she also discovered that you can't call out the RAC by phone, only over the internet and, even more surprisingly, they wouldn't attend a breakdown on the dual carriageway as it was too dangerous.
