Just to "Muddy the Waters", the starter on my 1931 RL is fitted with a CAV starter, BUT! I also have two rear mounted starters, Lucas model M35 Type BM7-0.
The only difference I can see between the CAV and Lucas starters, is the drive end bracket bearing, ball race on the CAV, brass bush on the Lucas.
Direction of rotation is indicated as anti-clockwise when viewed from the drive end.
