Early steering wheels
#1
Good day all.

I'm not familiar with the early cars c1923/4 but were they fitted with a steering wheel that clamped on rather than the splined type?

Regards from a very sunny Staffordshire.

Yes.

They were a lot more dished as well and some
were well provided with “grip” moulded into the rim.

Good photos in “Original Austin Sevens”

Hard to find good ones now.

SmileThanks for the prompt replies, the one I have is very dished, has knurling pressed into the covering which is intact bar a couple of small splits.

Not just 1923/4 cars, these were fitted through to late 1928.

I too have one of these early steering wheels for my chummy rebuild that needs some attention.

Mine appears to have been painted various colours over its life including a ‘lovely’ shade of lime green, the internet tells me some form of black plastic paint or plastic dip is the way to refinish them

Can anyone advise what the original finish was on these early steering wheels?

The covering is celluloid - not something you can do at home.
Specialist needed here.

Celluloid, yikes!
Might need to find a less flammable, modern, alternative.

You can repair small damages , like cracks,
With Araldite epoxy resin, tinted with black
Acrylic paint. With care you can refinish wheels
with acrylic spray paint.

There are firms that completely refinish wheels
but I can imagine that this would be very expensive.

An alternative is bind it with string. Much cheaper!
