Early steering wheels - Stuart Joseph - 21-04-2019 Good day all. I'm not familiar with the early cars c1923/4 but were they fitted with a steering wheel that clamped on rather than the splined type? Regards from a very sunny Staffordshire. Stuart RE: Early steering wheels - Ruairidh Dunford - 21-04-2019 Yes. RE: Early steering wheels - AllAlloyCup - 21-04-2019 They were a lot more dished as well and some were well provided with “grip” moulded into the rim. Good photos in “Original Austin Sevens” Hard to find good ones now. Regards Bill G RE: Early steering wheels - Stuart Joseph - 21-04-2019 Thanks for the prompt replies, the one I have is very dished, has knurling pressed into the covering which is intact bar a couple of small splits. Stuart RE: Early steering wheels - Mike Costigan - 21-04-2019 Not just 1923/4 cars, these were fitted through to late 1928. RE: Early steering wheels - agmatthews - 21-04-2019 I too have one of these early steering wheels for my chummy rebuild that needs some attention. Mine appears to have been painted various colours over its life including a ‘lovely’ shade of lime green, the internet tells me some form of black plastic paint or plastic dip is the way to refinish them Can anyone advise what the original finish was on these early steering wheels? Andrew RE: Early steering wheels - Nick Turley - 21-04-2019 The covering is celluloid - not something you can do at home. Specialist needed here. RE: Early steering wheels - agmatthews - 22-04-2019 Celluloid, yikes! Might need to find a less flammable, modern, alternative. -A RE: Early steering wheels - AllAlloyCup - 22-04-2019 You can repair small damages , like cracks, With Araldite epoxy resin, tinted with black Acrylic paint. With care you can refinish wheels with acrylic spray paint. There are firms that completely refinish wheels but I can imagine that this would be very expensive. Regards Bill G RE: Early steering wheels - Chris KC - 22-04-2019 An alternative is bind it with string. Much cheaper! |
