Fitting girling drums on a standard hub
#1
Hi,

I was looking at a girling brake drum in my workshop and wondering what it would take to fit on a standard brake setup. I always thought the issue was it fitting in the wheel but I tried a wheel centre and the only issue I could see was the spokes might foul the fin. It looks like the braking surface would be in the wrong place and a spacer may be required.

Has anyone fitted girling brake drums on a standard setup

Thanks

Do you mean, using them on Austin stub axles and shoes etc?

Yes just fitting them to standard brakes

The Girling drums will not fit the earlier brakes, Tony Betts did supply cast iron drums which will.

I think just cleaning up the o/d in a lathe and they do fit, just need to check the stud faces meet.

I think the offset of the linings to the hub face is different so they don't fit onto the hub. However they do fit the later vintage wheel. I had a 1930 saloon with Girling front axle and original 19" wheels.

They won't fit a 1932 RN with 1.25" brake shoes without reducing the diameter of the back plate.
