A lovely photograph of an early RN Saloon on homemade ramps. Note the bumpers, but what is the cylinder under the spare wheel?

Hi Robert

Super photo. Can’t help with the explanation for the cylinder but note the leather soled shoes!! I had several pairs like that years ago! Uncomfortable and noisy.

Cheers

What a smashing shot, like Howard, I have no idea what the cylinder is, but unlike Howard, I wear leather soled shoes, I have probably a dozen pairs and in my experience, they are supremely comfortable!

I bought my Loakes, 13 years ago, they still work perfectly.

No idea about the cylinder… sorry.

I think the cylinder is a dashboard light being used to illuminate the number plate.

That would be my guess. Otherwise it's either:
(a) a drogue parachute for emergency stops or
(b) some sort of nasty surprise for tailgaters...

Great photo Robert!

Looks much too big for a dashboard light to me, and the general tidy appearance of the car suggests that sort of bodge would not be employed by the owner, even more so with a fitment intended for interior use being. exposed to the elements.
I suspect the bumpers are an aftermarket embellishment supplied by such as Elephant Motors.

Zooming in it looks like it has a frame with release clips on it so perhaps a fire extinguisher viewed from the bottom?
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think!
