What wood screws best to use where body is being screwed onto Ash wood parts? (mild steel with wax in hole; brass + wax; stainless + wax)?

I only ever use stainless screws as a last resort, but after snapping three brass screws in the ash framework, I went to the stainless, without wax, incidentally.
Just my experience, but it worked for me.

If using Brass or Stainless Steel woodscrews use a pilot drill then insert a steel screw of the same size first (lubricated with soap). This will reduce the chances of brass or SS screws breaking.

I have always understood that brass screws will break. Not necessarily during fitting, but later when vibration hardens them and they snap under any pressure.. I also have it in the back of my mind that there is a reason not to use SS as well. I would always reach for steel....
