I noticed this is very thin on my car. More like 4mm copper rather than 6mm diameter or so I've seen elsewhere. Is it adviseable to have wider section for potential blockages, or am I worrying unduly?

4mm is fine, it only has to register pressure, not provide flow, so no need to go to bigger diameter tube
Mine are all 4mm and the oil pressure gauges work just fine Aye Greig

excellent! And presumably there is no point have massive spirals of copper pipe - just the quickest route there?

It's a good idea to form a simple loop in the pipe to accommodate vibration / thermal expansion / engine movement, you don't want the pipe under strain. It's quite easily worked if you anneal it first (heat till it glows red, quench with cold water).
