I have a block
M 268616 which has had to replace the cracked 88xxx original
Should I use either new plain guides or shouldered guides?
Or does it not matter?

It is my understanding that you should fit the correct type for the block Bill. I presume you do not know what type were fitted originally?
If you can take a picture of the underside of the valve chest, to show where they fit, I can tell you which it had originally.

Edit - your new block certainly had straight followers originally.

Thanks for the information Ruairidh.
Straight ones came out, but the seats had recessess
That looked as if shouldered ones would also fit.
I have a set of straight ones that I’ll fit.
Busy making alloy wings!
