Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - RupertW - 09-06-2021 Hello all, Slowly progressing with the chummy project and getting to the point of the wings and headlight mountings. I've had a look at various pictures but can't quite see how the headlights attach, or at least there seems to be a bit of variety which may or may not be how they left the factory. Can anyone advise on how the headlights 'should' attach, along with how the wiring should be routed (again seems to be different approaches!). Close up pictures would be much appreciated! Many thanks in advance RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Hedd_Jones - 09-06-2021 What year late chummy Rupert? My recently sold '30 AE was different to my recently purchased '28 AD. Can supply photos of both types when I get home however AE AD, similar, but not quite the same. It has more ironmongery above the wing, and the bracket is a slightly different shape. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - RupertW - 09-06-2021 Thanks for those Hedd, it's '29 AE type, so I'd think similar to the first picture. I'd overlooked that some AD's had wing mounted lights as well. Thank you for the offer of further pictures, no urgency but much appreciated when you have a moment. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Mike Costigan - 09-06-2021 The headlamps are mounted on separate pieces of ironmongery, but there are several different versions and it is easy to get the wrong ones. The top of the headlamp should be roughly on a line with the top of the radiator cowl aperture, as on this RK: 1929 RK.jpg (Size: 76.47 KB / Downloads: 291) Get it wrong, and you can end up with them too high, like this: 1929 AE copy.jpg (Size: 164.3 KB / Downloads: 289) RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Robert Leigh - 09-06-2021 Hedd I am interested in the differences, but I can't see any headlamps or brackets on your first image. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Hedd_Jones - 09-06-2021 robert, the brackets are fitted in the first pic. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Robert Leigh - 09-06-2021 Thanks Hedd, I can see them now. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Hedd_Jones - 10-06-2021 Rupert Apologies for the delay. These are what you mount the headlights to on an AE. They go on top of the front wing, bolt through onto the wing stay beneath. Think these are off an RK, but they are identical as far as I can tell AE RK RF RL. I robbed the ones off my late fathers AE for my RL (along with the wing stays), then manufactured some for the AE when I chucked it together. As noted it is important that you use the lower two, of the three bolt holes. Or your headlights will be too high. A common problem, I guess also on built up cars where none of the holes are there for the builder to use. I will happily draw round them for you so you can get them profiled, you then just need a stout bench and vice with perhaps some heat to kink into shape. As to the kink, they are nest adjusted by fitting on the car with the lamp and weighing the job up. A vice and a large shifter is all that is needed. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - RupertW - 10-06-2021 Many thanks for that Hedd. I'll see if I locate some ready to go in the first instance, otherwise I might take up your kind offer of measurements - if anyone has some going spare please do get in touch! Should the wiring go through a hole in the wing, or can it be routed from the from? I think I've seen both, and only one of my wings has a hole in place for the wiring. RE: Late Chummy Headlight Mountings - Hedd_Jones - 10-06-2021 They were fitted with R47 lucas lamps. I've never seen one where the wiring doesnt go up the spout. Infact theres a pair in the photo above. |
