Starting Handle - mopetta - 04-01-2021

I dismantled the starting handle cover. Seems like something is missing/incorrect.
No spring found. Can anyone explain what I have or what is missing ? It's a coil engine from 1930.

thanks
Oliver

Looks like a home made conversion from a long nose to a short nose - 'O' rings didn't exist in 1930 ?? There should be a coil spring which bears against a shoulder on the inner end of the nose and bears against the "hub" of the starting handle. I assume that the start handle boss does not pass through the bush (with the O ring) which it should do so the spring retracts the starting handle. But I could have got it all wrong !!

It should probably look like this (1929-30 pattern), with the handle shaft retained by the brass nut (the nosepiece is threaded to suit).

The later, peg type started in March 1931.

Well done Howard, good link. No parts available for this type, I convert them to take the later shaft as per yours on the Brookfield
