Door trim plywood and ali capping. - Tony Griffiths - 01-11-2020

Wrestling with undoing some of the poor-quality work on my new/old AF Chummy: can anyone recommend the best thickness of plywood to use on the inside of the door and the most appropriate "leathercloth" to fit?
Is the aluminium strip still available that fits on the top face of the door? For some unknown reason, the bodger whose hands the vehicle has passed appears to have shortened it.

It's just as easy to do the job properly with ash.

It will last longer as well.

The exact aluminium is not available, but you can get a very similar hockey stick or J section. I beleive paul beck has it.

And you may find proper leather cloth or recline is no longer available. But very similar materials are advertised.

I find it better to use the same material on the panels as you would use on the seats.. that way colour and block patterns will match.

Thanks, Tony. That's good advice - and appreciated.

Definitely Ash for the frame. Marine ply for the trim panels.

What about the strip, is it beading, that goes round the edge of the doors? No Chummy owner I know has put it on themselves. What material so flexible that it can be curved quite sharply, and how is it fastened, pins, glue?

Steve, the later cars - AE, AF and AG - didn't have the beading round the doors.

Steve, I bought some aluminium T shaped beading with a curved top to math the original and with careful annealing curved the back edge and mitred the front corner. It looked fine for a “driver” quality car (which all mine are!) and I drilled, countersunk and screwed the beading on.

This is the aluminium moulding that I used on my AD tourer. From Woolies - still listed on line.

I used this on my 33 Tourer. Very clear dimensions are given.
