Peter. Chris is correct on both counts as far as I'm aware.

I had Avons on my Ruby running at 28psi and once I’d sorted the issue of castor angle on the front axle it drove really well and I couldn’t wear them out!

In answer to Chris’s question regarding Blockleys, I fitted a new set to the Box Saloon a few years ago and the car drives superbly with good grip wet or dry and no wandering, even at a registered 52 mph with HGVs going past. I set the pressures set at 25psi front and back.

I think that is the problem with the Avons. Their strength is their weakness. They don't wear out, so people are inclined to keep them for years (guilty as charged, m'lud) until they are rock hard and really don't perform as a tyre should do...

I might be imagining it but was someone marketing a different brand to PWA7C members? If so has anyone any experience?

Peter, I have no connection here but Howard Annett advertises Ruby tyres 4.00” 17” (not 4.00/4.25”) in the A7OC (London) mag £80 each plus tubes and tapes available

Quite a lot of comment here about steering problems in crosswinds, bumpy roads etc in relation to choice of tyres.
I have Longstone 4’’ on our 1937 Opal and around 25lbs seems to be a good compromise.
However the biggest contribution to better steering comes from fitting a John Miles designed extension to the steering arm — the overall length is increased to just under 6’’.  This lowers the ratio by 20% — allows better control and largely reduces bump steer.

Thank you Denis, if I ever get the Ruby running I'll give him a call  Big Grin

As mentioned above, Avon were bought out by Goodyear, road tyre manufacture moved to Eastern Europe. Competition tyres remain in the UK, surprise surprise now under the name Nova. It is said that some of the serious racing guys clubbed together to buy the equipment and keep the specialist tyres available. Will we see any Sevens on brand new Nova tyres at Shelsley on Sunday?

Very interesting.

But I can't see them getting into pre-war sized tyres when we are so well served by the likes of Blockley, Longstone, etc.

The Avon website still shows:

About Avon - Design, quality & ability (avontyres.com)

"Avon Tyres is owned by the Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. For more information about Cooper Tire please click here (this link will take you to an external site.)"

Out of date- a UK report advised the UK factory now closed
