  Ignition Leads
Posted by: Graham Barker - 21-10-2024, 03:38 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (17)

I have acquired a Powerspark electronic distributor that I am going to try on my Ruby. Powerspark recommend using either silicon or resistive leads instead of copper leads.
Do members have experience with these leads that would suggest that one of these types of leads is better than the other for use in an Austin 7?

The sporting chap who won yesterday's Inter Reg rally driving a product of Abingdon has had a moment of revelation, if not epiphany, and seeks a new and wonderful life driving a Seven in competition. We must therefore all help and encourage him. Does this "Ulster" have any history, what is known about it? Rod Yates body, engine attributed to Paul Bonewell. I have seen just these few photos. The scuttle tank is assisted by a the fuel pump on the Ruby crankcase to feed the two Amal carbs, not a familiar set up. Others may recognise the ali head more quickly than me just observing that it is not a Speedex or Cambridge head. A certain club might not like it but I suspect that it would be a welcome addition to Bert Hadley entries.

  Crunching between third and top
Posted by: Ivor Hawkins - 20-10-2024, 06:37 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (4)

Evening fellas. I’ve been driving all sorts of Sevens for many, many years but the (wrong) four speed crash box in the RP always crunches between third and top unless I double de clutch.

The change between second and third is lovely and smooth and going down the box is no problem either.

Should I really have to double de clutch up to top or while I have the box out of the car should I be looking for anything obvious.

The box is nice and quiet and the internal condition appears to be excellent, so I don’t really want to change the gearbox if I don’t have to.

Does anyone with a penchant for gearboxes have any sage advice?

I came across this picture recently - presumably others have seen it before?

The Mathewsons Chummy sold for far more than the estimate. Some of the other estimates were so far out that they might as well have said, "We've no idea."

60 years of Austin Seven ownership…
Posted by: Ruairidh Dunford - 18-10-2024, 05:49 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (41)

It is exactly 60 years since our father, Ian, bought his first Austin Seven.

380’000 miles later - we still have the car and it is being enjoyed by the third generation of Dunfords. We are still in touch with Nick Gifford (and his family) who sold BME 180 to Ian in October 1964.

The first photo is Nick with the car around 1964 and the other taken yesterday, with Ian’s youngest grandchildren sat inside.

Our lives would have been very different if Ian had not bought this car.

  Smokers Hatch
Posted by: Hugh Barnes - 18-10-2024, 08:50 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

I am helping a pal who is restoring an MG M Type Sportsman Coupe. Pretty little thing. This is a fixed head body with a Smoker's Hatch. Trouble is, from what little he has left of the bodywork, a Smoker's Hatch is missing. he asks, very kindly, if his compatriots in the Austin 7 world might be able to help, either with some dimension, photos or, even better, if someone has the remains that they would be willing to sell so he could use it or have it as a pattern to make new.

Can any kind person help?

Edit even before I post to say I have just found a thread on the old forum with some details, but any further offers of help would be welcome...

  Trailer advice
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 17-10-2024, 04:30 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (21)

I recently purchased a Woodford L-021 1300kg trailer and it's excellent in all respects, except for the fact that it won't fit in my workshop... It is 4 inches too wide. Yes, I know, I should have measured etc etc. Don't give me grief, Debs has already done that.

So I shall be moving it on in the near future. By all means let me know if you want one.

What I would like to find to replace it is a mainstream manufacturer's single-axle, braked trailer (e.g. Brian James, Woodford, Lider, Ifor Williams) that is as compact as possible, capable of carrying any kind of Austin Seven.

Dos anyone have recommendations of specific models to consider please?

I've not seen one of these before, I wonder if there are any other survivors? I like the quirkiness of the headlamp stay that moves with the back-plates!
