  1930 Boat Tail Tourer
Posted by: steves7 - 19-08-2024, 08:31 PM - Forum: Sales - No Replies

Time to sell my 1930 Boat Tail Tourer.   I posted on the forum for some time as sparkeysprite and there is probably more information on this car if you look at my previous posts under that name (new computer and lost my login - despite numerous attempts I couldn't rest my password - so start again as Steves7..)

I've had the car for about 3 years and it's been fun, but I'm not using it much so maybe time to move it on.  It's a scruffy little thing and although the photos were taken only a few weeks ago they do flatter the car cosmetically.  I considered restoring it when I got it, but I like the fact it looks like it's had a life. The interior is tidy and I suspect that the seats have had new covers at some stage.  The car has no hood or tonneau - it did come with a hood frame but I suspect not the right one.

It's been reliable for me and apart from regular trips around the Peak District it's had longer runs to VSCC events and to the Centenary Event in 2022 (5 hour trip each way!).  I had planned to try some trials but I'm not sure it's the right car for trialling.

It's not being advertised anywhere else yet and I'm open to offers.  As you'll see from my previous posts (as sparkeysprite) I'm no Austin 7 expert and will probably not be able to answer any detailed questions on originality etc, so if you're interested it would be best to come and see it in the Peak District.  I'm happy to send further photos - just let me know what you want to see.

Best regards

Steve

Are D shaped back axle torque tubes interchangeable?
Posted by: Nick Lettington - 18-08-2024, 12:26 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

I know the pinion shafts are different because of the shoulder. Can anyone please confirm whether the axle casing is the same on the mark 1 and mark 2 ruby axle (other than the brake backplates)...

Will a mark 2 torque tube bolt into the mark 1 axle without modification?

Drove the RP yesterday, no problems. This morning it would not start. A look inside the distributor showed why. I am amazed it ran at all yesterday.

Mental note to self: Do not overgrease the drive gear...

  Four blade fan?
Posted by: Howard Wright - 17-08-2024, 06:28 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (24)

Hi All

Since I’ve started to use my C Cab van more frequently I’ve noticed that it seems to run very hot.  As mentioned in another post I decided to fit a capillary gauge to check the temperature (there was a handy boss already present in the header tank).

Well the average running temperature was around 90 degrees. Any hill or putting my foot down sent the gauge up to 100 and on a 1 in 5 near us the rad boiled. I checked the capillary gauge by comparing it with a glass alcohol gauge and it’s accurate.

The engine is one I rebuilt about 2 years ago as a spare. It was thoroughly cleaned and now has a brand new Ricardo head. Both hoses are new and the bottom one not pinched by the dynamo. Just to check I took the side branch off and it was all clean as a whistle.

The radiator is a period honeycomb one of unknown vintage so I used a can of Holts Speedflush yesterday evening. It still runs hot!

I don’t want to replace the honeycomb rad which I think is probably the problem. So I’m contemplating a four blade fan.

My question is how much more cooling do you get from a four blade over a two blade?

Cheers

Howard

  19" wheels
Posted by: colina - 17-08-2024, 08:28 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - No Replies

I'm looking for a set (5) of 19" open centre wheels. If you don't have 5 I'm happy to consider the odd one or two. Ideally in the East Midlands area but I'm willing to travel.

  Steering Wheel cosmetics
Posted by: Old Dave - 15-08-2024, 04:57 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (15)

My car's steering wheel is a little chipped here and there - well more than a little perhaps. See pic.  Strangely the car seems to steer OK!

Obviously I could

a. Look for a less damaged wheel

b. pay to have it professionally re-moulded.

Can anyone suggest a middle -road with something approaching a paint to fill the gaps??

All help appreciated as usual

The driver is my little American granddaughter - who isn't happy with a "4 on the floor" gearbox.

  Headlining Fabric - A7 Saloons
Posted by: Chris KC - 15-08-2024, 09:53 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

Does anyone have reliable info on what fabric, and in what colour(s), was originally used for A7 saloon headlining?

Up to this point I've been dismissing the tatty remnants in the roof of my RP as "modern" replacement, but upon inspecting fragments from another (reportedly 'untouched') roof they are the same - it's quite a thin fabric, brushed soft only on the face side, with a distinct weave on the reverse, and the colour - with due allowance for grot and fading - is perhaps best described as "cream". It's miles away from the opulent stuff modern trim suppliers offer.

Rummaging through the books and catalogues I have has turned up no info at all - I only found an online resource which says headlinings were "grey", but without citing any source.

Thoughts welcomed... I shall more than likely choose something (a) available and (b) I like - but it's always good to start from a position of knowledge.
