Fxxckin' 'ell. So after much modification to a mid twenties three speed, it has the boss for an additional mounting bolt, I have discovered an issue. I have modded the clutch etc., to the Terry Griffin specs. And now I find that there are three large cracks on the O/S boss where the clutch shaft goes through the bell housing. I have no idea how or when this occurred. Weld it up or is that a fool's errand? One crack appears to have been there for some time as its full of oil/grease. Have others had this issue and what causes this?

No idea what causes it but if you can get the oil out of the cracks it should weld up fine.I had a 3 sp with cracks in the side and it held up trialling after weld.
Yours may have cracked after a crank failure leaving the flywheel to flail about but only a guess.

Thank you, Dave. Welded up fine, though I've got some clean up to do. It seems a bit odd since the cracks were on the boss on the outside of the bell housing where the pedal attaches, running straight to the housing. And no obvious damage to the interior. Maybe it had been dropped on the boss, but no obvious damage which would indicate that. It was if the pedal shaft had been grabbed in some way.
