Maybe I just read the wrong books but there seems so little written about these joints and their repair/ maintenance.
Or is there simply nothing to write?

There was a lot of known about these in the 1960s / 1970s and part swapping for better pins blocks and housings was usual.
I even found a pair of good blocks and a pin in a charity shop !!! They were in a box of Meccano bits.
