Could someone kindly give me the rules about carrying children (under 14, and under 5) in our Sevens?

It's been a while so my memory is a bit hazy but I think the normal seatbelt /car seat rules apply for front seats. The difficulty there is that you are strictly not allowed to retrofit seatbelts /isofix fittings to a car that was not designed to have them, at least, not as a way of satisfying the child-seat rules. It gets controversial when there are no rear seats as I think there as several laws that contradict.

Rear seats are ok for children that are beyond car-seat stage. I can't remember about car-seat age children.

There are some exemptions for wedding cars and taxis.

In practice I don't think the police are the least bit interested, nor would anyone else be unless you had the misfortune of injuring someone.

Looking on the government website...

"If your vehicle does not have seat belts, for example it’s a classic car, you are not allowed to carry any children under 3 years old in it.

Children over 3 are only allowed to sit in the back seats.

These rules only apply if your vehicle was originally made without seat belts."

Said to be produced with the blessing of the DoT.
One might interpret this to cover older children but you must draw your own conclusions, of course.

Whilst on the subject of seatbelts. Car seat belts do not prevent accidents they do however in many cases prevent serious injury when involved in an accident.

That last photo reminded me .when our youngest 2 girls were in school orchestras I sometimes took them and their instruments to practices in the 2 seat special. The flute was no problem but the french horn was always in the way.
