Special Display: Opals and Pearls.....

Does that mean we can look forward to six months of intermitent wrangling about what constitutes an "Opal" ?

There is no debate, the historical evidence is clear…

As Mike Costigan discovered after hours of relentless, brow-furrowing research, the name "Opal" was only used in catalogues for the Chrome-radiator 2-seater that overlapped the production of the next version with the cowled pressed-steel "Ruby" front. Over decades people have referred to the cowled version of the 2-seater as the "Opal" - as this matched the Ruby and Pearl of similar style names. Now, for us pedants, we know that this was incorrect. If you have an hour to spare looking through the following you'll be able to confirm it for yourself: https://archive.a7ca.org/collections/show-brochures/ Still, deciding if your Opal really is an Opal - or a piece of costume jewellery - is a tad tricky as it has to be on of the "overlap" cars. Good luck with that!
