What have you done today with your Austin Seven
   

   


What did we do today? Well, since you ask, modesty compels me blush slightly and to say we won the Pre War class in Bob Blackstock's excellently organised Inter Register Rally. Whilst we got all control boards and reached every marshals post, times achieved by a Ruby wheezing up and then going very gently down the Cotswolds earned us many more time penalties than the overall winning Volvo Amazon, pictured at the start. The Chummy of Ecurie Bradshaw was second in class, though somewhat hampered by a overheating magneto. Thanks to Bob and  his number  of marshals who seemed highly entertained by a rallying Ruby, particularly the rather hidden control who had a demonstration of Seven brakes, or lack thereof as we whizzed past and then had to reverse to get our card signed.

Tonight I removed a half shaft nut with my fingers and pulled off the hub by hand... that can't be good.

Where would I start! Definitely plenty of triggers... little of which I can share on here, but also I'm angry at my stupidly in thinking the half built special I'd intended to stick a Silverstone shell on and pass on was built by someone who had a modicum of knowledge!  I merely went to remove a brake drum to flip the lever the right way up (down)... play in the wheel bearing was troubling, but the drum seemed glued to the hub. Still... no tools required for disassembly.

With a makeshift hub puller just to give sufficient grip...(no threads were harmed in the making of this post... the exhaust clamp was also finger tight.
   

Now I'm hoping the stiffness in the half shaft is just the backlash adjusters being too tight. Then I can get ro lapping the hubs onto the tapers... otherwise I may order a skip!

Trouble is, if I sell this pup on, I risk being labelled the 'PO' who jeffed it all up!

As an aside... I have never seen such tiny brake shoe areas... would an RP d type axle have 1" brakes?

No!  1 1/4” shoes came in with the RN.
