nut plates source

Hi All,

I have several nut plates (2BA) riveted to the bulkhead of my Ulster Rep. They are used to hold down the panel at the starter. Does anyone have a source for these in 2BA as well as 1/4 Whitworth?

Erich - I found 2ba rivnuts from a company in Northern Ireland but had to buy 2000 at a time - I went for Metric ones in the end and used older looking nickel plated screws which suit this fixing very well.

I can post Chris some to bring to you, if you only need a couple.

Thank you Ruairidh. What I'm looking for is something like this, https://www.aircraftfast.com/floating_nut_plates.htm, rather than a nutsert or rivnut. As the Compound Curvatures body has them in 2BA, I was going to use a couple in 1/4 Whitworth to attach the side panels rather than the loose nut on the inside of the footwells as is currently on the car, or welding a nut on the footwell as Chris Gould's book suggests.

Erich, ebay seems to refer to this sort of thing as an anchor nut. 2BA crop up from time to time but there are others out there at present. Maybe worth a search? These people, for example, call them Nut Plates.

The nut plate would be fine as long as the nut is a snug fit! They would be fitted using 1/8" blind (pop type) rivets I imagine, or tiny self tappers. There will be minimal load on the cage when tightening the screw...a different matter when the nut is rusted on as we all know! The 50's cage nuts were in a square cage spot welded on and were a delight to remove when rusted in (I remember my TR3A wings with affection -not!- only a couple out of dozens came free willingly!) As I was in the business I replaced them all with Stainless Hexagon shank Rivnuts into hexagon holes (we made a hexagon cutting tool!) and stainless bolts as well.

Thank you all. Stuart, those are good sites. As no supplier seems to have 1/4 Whitworth(no surprise) would anyone know what I could get away with in terms of drilling and tapping for 1/4 Whitworth? I was thinking No. 10 would still leave enough meat in the nut. These are only going to be used at the rear of the side panels so won't carry much of a load. I'll likely use the solid ones rather than the caged ones and attach with solid rivets.

1/4-20 UNC? ...should do it in place of 1/4 BSW. Without looking it up I do not recall the across flats dimensions of the nuts, but the threads are VERY similar...
