Definitely lucky heather.  Have had a bunch on all my Austins since picking a bunch up at the 'top end', before starting out on an 'out of season' John 'o Groats - Land's End run back in '89...

The sprig of heather on the radiator is from the Heather and Honey Run on 25th August, when about 50 vintage and classic cars have a run followed by a lunch just outside Thirsk, all to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

 You can't have too many good luck charms when you run an Austin 7!

Oh, I understand.  Given the likelihood of a failure when taking an Austin Seven for a drive, it's important to have as much luck as possible.

Oh Dear! I must be doing something wrong. I have no heather or any other good luck charms, and, in now some 19K miles of motoring in my Seven, the only two involuntary stops have been because of punctures.

We generally associate heather with Scotland, but it grows just as abundantly on the North Yorkshire moors, the Lake District and the Peak District (the dark peak). It even grows down here in certain areas in the Cévennes, where the soil is acidic, despite the drier climate. Personally though I prefer a bunch of lavender. It's more relevant to the area.

I don't worry about breakdowns. My RP has never let me down, and worrying about the possibility won't make any difference.

I don't have the lucky charms for the Austin 7 itself, it is to ward off the large log wagons, horses and convoys of Range Rovers etc on the shooting parties that abound in my part of the world.

I have had the car for about 5 years.   Today, I looked at the rear seat squab: - re-upholstered a long time ago in vinyl, under-stuffed with a cheap piece of foam, and mounted on a wormy, floppy, piece of thin plywood.

But hey, how often do you use the rear seat?

Under the foam, deflated, I found:
   

the wonderfully named "Selconcusco Self controlled air cushion"

   

Presumably a replacement for a Moseley cushion, it is in good condition, and is holding air.

I don't think the car holds more surprises, but you never know.
