So, with the voltmeter across the dynamos joined terminalsĀ as it was warming up for some noise diagnosis I was getting 5v on tickover which I think is ok?
Now the car is off the ignition warning light is still on. Is this my switch failing or some other electrical gremlin?
I think I've answered my own question it's a sticky relay

Take the top off the cut-out box (assuming you have one)
Rev the engine and close the cut out - a two person job if you don't have a hand throttle - does the red light go out?

I have long enough arms to just push the throttle!
Yes, goes out but the ammeter shows no charging, it's happy to show discharge if I turn the lights on though.

The six volts behind the warning lamp should be switched with the ignition. so with the ignition off the lamp shouldn't be lit regardless of whether the dynamo is charging or not

Interesting. Clearly there's a problem somewhere. Probably the switch?

so the issue was the cutout sticking closed.
