Alternative engines - what's been tried?
#21
I have been thinking about fitting a 1929 Austin 16/6 engine, the car would be a mini version of the Aero engined specials so beloved by the VSCC.

Why not Ian?

Those 16/6 engines do have a reputation for being a bit tricky though Sad

A friend has a 16/6 and a spare engine, I am aware they have some issues, timing chain slip is one, but these could possibly be engineered out. The reasoning behind this option was staying in period and remaining Austin, the 12/4 engine has a lousy inlet port, the 16/6 is pretty good and has a nice Ricardo chamber, probably would not be the most competitive car but likely to be heaps of fun. I just love the Idea of the aero engined Edwardians and think it would be fun to build one in miniature on a seven chassis, the object being to remain in period and not use post war engines.

I have a 3 cylinder Suzuki and no A7 engine.
If I can work things out the 3 cyl could be good fun

It has been done before in the early 1980's in a Chummy.
The last time I saw the car was at Bendigo Swap Meet.
If you ask around some one will know where it is.
Would be good for reference so you know the pitfalls before you start.

As in previous pages of this post some of you have shown interest in "our" Ruby, meaning engines from the Godefroy & Lévêque firm, here are some links:

Bob Drewitt recently just debuted his Austin 7 chassis with twin MAG V Twins and chain drive.
The V5 has it down as a Sports Austin, so it must be true!

The Baker brothers were both building a seven based special,Davids a JAP vee twin unsupercharged and Robins using twin superchargers.Sadly Robin didn't finish his car due to illness.
Glenn Curtiss,of Curtiss engine fame built a 4 1/2 litre v8 powered motorcycle in 1907 and rode it himself for an unofficial land speed record of 136 mph, Unbeaten by a motorcycle until 1930.
