What have you done today with your Austin Seven
Hi,
Having finally got the engine and gearbox in the Nippy after what started out as a "simple repair" - it opened up a huge can of worms - I started it first time to discover the most awful clattering and banging the other night.
Today, I've managed to fix it in about 30 seconds by putting the starting handle back on which stopped the bar that goes into the nose cone from bouncing about and making the awful noise.
You live and learn I guess!

I have a pedal that wants to dismantle itself on one of the cars, I just reach down and tighten it.

Talking of pedals, I have an admission to make. After last putting the engine back into the Ruby, I have been unable to find the brake pedal, the actual little plate on a rod that sticks into the cabin. Did the dog eat it, did a bird fly away with it to make a nest, did it roll down the hill into the canal? I only ever use the handle,but another driver was a bit put out by the total lack of foot braking. Has anybody got one, or can recommend a supplier?

Did you take is somewhere to clean it, paint it, show it to someone, fix the pad on so it doesn't come off at the most awkward moment .... etc?

Hi All

I’ve had a first short test drive towing a trailer.

The trailer is an old Erde 100 which I’ve refurbished and swapped the sides for the top box.
 
The tow bar is an A frame which goes back to the chassis extensions, but is also fixed to a sub frame on the body.

The real headache was getting a 6 volt indicator warning buzzer. In the end I’ve used a reed switch with the indicator wires wrapped round it a dozen times.  At first I couldn’t understand why it wouldn't work but then realised that LEDs don’t pull enough current so I’ll have to use incandescent bulbs.

All good fun  Big Grin.

Hi Jim

Unfortunately that is a flasher relay. I use one like that to control the flashing lights on the car and trailer. The warning buzzer I needed is one that tells you when the trailer indicators aren’t working. Here is the 12 volt version on eBay.

Now that the two saloons are generally roadworthy, I hope the chummy still is (it was when I last looked at it), and I have a target date in March to get the steam roller 'roadworthy' (it currently being drive around the yard worthy). And as soon as Ive got the GE cup engine running it can be sold (with the rest of the car) I thought I needed a new project.

So I bought this the other day, thankfully without the extensions, it fitted in the Beetle. I went to buy the front half of a chassis, got there and upgraded, twice the money, twice as much chassis. This is a 1934 job. Its about as straight as a bannana, a previous owner didn't believe in the weld a bit - let it cool a bit theory when boxing the rails. DOH. I'm rather hoping jacking it under the arse end of something rather heavy may well improve its alignment. Not that it matters given what I intend to do with it.

   

Most of the big bits in stock for this project. The engine currently in the blue saloon will form the basis. It will be a 'special', but not as commonly known here. Not sure if I'll go short cowl, or tall yet.

Its going to be a walk alongside, low geared shed shunter. Hand clutch, couple of gearboxes and quite heavy. It'll get used to shunt 4 wheel trailers in and out of my shed. I'm getting too old for climbing on and off the Fordson Major all the time.

If anyone has any gubbins in their stock of spares previously used to join 2 gearboxes I would be interested, save me re-inventing the wheel. Also any home brewed engine governors (the Military used Austin 10 engines with governors on them for pumps/welders etc. One of these would be good). Possibly also interested if anyone might have an A30 rear axle, would be nice to keep the Austin 7 connection rather than narrow a randy lover axle.

Hopefully the biggest expense will be in welding rods.

got the RP out again today, still tinkering with little coolant weeps, plan was to swap sheds with the chummy, so put that on charge (not that it was flat)

Thought Id get the oil warm and dump it, it having done 50or so miles since the transplant, and having been in an engine I always change the oil soon after. So went for a jolly. Some way round the bypass we lost all go, and coasted to a gateway. It felt like no fuel and sure enough nothing in the bowl. Messing with the pump suggested it wasn't doing its thing and upon removal this was proven.

The diaphragm is ok, (though seemingly it wont go back on despite much swearing) so I suspect stuck non returns. However its got a strange top with some valves like I've not seen before. Gave it up as a bad job and walked home,

I concocted a bottle feed arrangement from shit in the shed, a nice threaded fitting fitted to a pepsi bottle lid. The rest of the pepsi bottle, a spare banjo, and the gas hose of the camping stove. Even found some jub clips then walked back with some fuel.

I blocked the hole where the pump used to be with a piece of card and bottle fed her home.

Judging by the oil slick on the drive when I got home and the colour of the crankcase wing in the above photo, the bit of card wasn't 100% successful. But we still had plenty of oil and oil pressure. So all is good.

I shall study the pump tomorrow at some point. Thankfully I have a large box of used others. Given the diaphragm is ok, I hope to sort something out from stock.
